How we start it out..from the NWS forecast discussion..

Central and Eastern Interior...

- Persistent cold weather in the Interior remains with
temperatures well below normal through the weekend.

- Most cloud cover moves northeast later this week, leaving much
of the Interior clear and calm as isolated snow showers along
the Alcan Border dissipate.

- Widespread temperatures in the 30s/40s below zero or colder will
continue with possible 50s/60s and below zero in the coldest
spots later this week.

- A long term Cold Weather Advisory has been issued through the
weekend for the Central/Eastern Interior. Areas of ice fog are
ongoing in Fairbanks and are expected to expand in coverage
heading through the weekend.

Happy New Year!!!

I’d add to the nice graphic, how many lessons of economy, savings, and just overall good behavior does winter teach?! In warm weather cultures, bad habits are much easier to pick up... :-(

The golf course I worked at was like a gigantic botanical garden. My main job there was mowing fairways and rough, and I knew just about every nook and cranny of that place like the back of my hand. When the weather was fine and I was done it gave me a feeling of well-being to look back at it. I didn’t let the $11 an hour spoil it and almost 7 years later I still get that same feeling whenever I think about it or look at some of the photos I took. At the time, I didn’t need the money as much as I needed that job.

I’m in mid-Michigan.
Last frost is May 15 (5A).
Which seed plants should I have in my ‘starters’ by the end of the month?

Happy New Year to All!! We are getting massive rain storms here in So Cal - rain is never bad news here as we've been subjected to years of drought and water rationing.

The weather has been so wet here, alternating with warm days, The Irises and hibiscus don't know what to do and have started blooming again.

Jalapeno Pinwheels w/ Bacon / Fast, easy, and good.
Cream cheese, fresh jalapenos, bacon, and cheese ---- need I say more?

Ing 8 oz bar cr/cheese, 1 tsp gar/pwder 6 slices cooked/crumbled bacon, 2 green onions,
diced 1 cup shredded cheddar ¼ cup diced jalapenos w/ seeds for heat 2 lge flour tortillas

Method Mix creamy softened cr/cheese, garlic powder. Stir in crumbled bacon, diced green onions, cheese, and diced jalapenos. Spread atop tortillas. Tightly roll each into "logs" and then saran. Chill 30 min. Slice into 1-inch pinwheels.

Chef Notes Add more or less jalapeno depending on heat wanted. Or use pickled jalapenos for milder flavor. Softened cream cheese is easier to spread. It is important to rollup tortilla as tight as possible to hold ing. Refrigerating rolls before slicing makes cutting easier. For a large crowd, double the recipe. Serve with a ranch-type dip.

Pinned tab updated for Jan 2026 thread.

Time for that 1-2 weeks of getting used to writing a new year in the date. Luckily a 5 can be turned into a 6

Hi all. Happy new year from Tennessee. Was wondering if anyone has any secrets to getting amaryllis bulbs to rebloom? I dutifully did my research regarding getting the bulbs to go dormant, then storage, then repotting. Lots of beautiful foliage but no blooms Any suggestions?

Chief (RIP) and Dolly (15!) were supposed to be outside dogs, too - but for a couple of stone-cold rabbit hunters, they adapted pretty darn quick to life indoors!

Not sure if I posted my latest vehicle woes or not. Transmission went out on the Trailblazer I bought back in Sept. I was hoping 2005 was new enough to not have what was a common issue with them but I guess not. The fluid pump goes bad on them. Have to take the transmission out and half disassemble it at which point you might as well just rebuild it. Will have to wait for warm weather.

Same with the Chevy truck that lost oil pressure that will need an engine rebuild.

Been getting by with the Focus which has electrical issues. Bought a spare battery and keep it in the trunk. Can’t run the heater fan though so there’s been a few cold trips to work at 4am.

Bought an old 1991 F-150 yesterday. Point A to point B with good heat and I can tow/haul stuff again.
