During a routine home renovation, contractors in Ollala, Washington, were shocked to come across a small case containing a plethora of explosives.

Contractors renovating Washington state home discover case of live military grenades packed with TNT

Mystery surrounds discovery of military-style explosives at Washington state property as authorities investigate how live grenades ended up in home.

The homeowners, who had just purchased the home, were equally surprised by the discovery and called 911 to report the explosives.

The Kitsap County Sheriff's Office responded, and after inspecting the case, Sheriff's Deputies called in the bomb squad and the explosive ordnance team from a nearby Naval base.

In the case, they unpacked 10 live grenades, blasting caps, and other explosive devices.

The bomb squad took possession of the explosives, while a team from Bangor Naval Base seized the grenades, which are suspected to be military issue.

The area was cleared, and the contractors were able to resume work on the property, but an investigation into the source of the explosives is ongoing.

I'm sure the construction workers will be extra careful during the remainder of the project, as this is definitely a case where "delicate demo" should apply.

The grenades are not functional as a "pull pin and throw it" weapon: if you look on the fuse assembly, you will see an open pin hole that would normally be taken up by the metal pin that holds the striker and striker spring in place. They could be made functional in other ways, but I won't list those ways.

The HDP-1 does appear to be the real thing. It is used as a booster charge to initiate the main explosive such as ANFO or the explosive slurry mixtures used in commercial blasting and clearing of rock for construction purposes.

Maybe that’s why the houses in Texas don’t have basements.

"Fake novelty grenades."

Do you store your fake novelty grenades with live high explosive booster charges and blasting caps?

I hope they noticed the blasting cap in contact proximity with the booster charges. Those babies are either composition B or perhaps PETN. Those are large, more dangerous than the grenades.

Yeah, PETN is more powerful than TNT or even C-4. Those are more powerful than the grenades. And look! There is a blasting cap right there with those explosives. Now that is a rule breaker for sure.

Back in 1954 dad found a stick of dynamite in a house we were renting in Saguache Colorado. I remember the schools all had films warning kids to not touch blasting caps or explosives if you found them in the street.
Being in the Combat Engineers in WW II, he showed us how to destroy a stick of dynamite by cutting it in long pieces and spreading the TNT over a wide area.

The question was who makes grenades except for the military.

Yes. That small brick building is part of the Greenfield Village historical building and I walked in it a number of times.

The part knocked to pieces to make an opening was repaired later.
