Researchers have found that cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, a vomiting condition tied to chronic cannabis use, rose sharply in US emergency departments between 2016 and 2022 and has stayed elevated.
As of June 2025, nearly half of US residents live in states with legalized recreational cannabis, and policy shifts have expanded adult-use access through legalization, medical programs, and decriminalization. Among cannabis-related harms, cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) has been described as a growing concern in clinical and public health settings.
CHS was first identified in 2004 in Australia and remains a syndrome with uncertain etiology. Proposed neurophysiological mechanisms include downregulation of cannabinoid 1 receptors, altered transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 signaling, and disrupted hypothalamic thermoregulation.
CHS has three defined phases. The first two include a prodromal phase of abdominal pain or morning nausea which can last for months or years at a time, and a hyperemetic phase, lasting a few days with recurrent vomiting and potential escalation to "scromiting" where screaming in pain while vomiting can occur.
Within these phases, people with CHS tend to bathe compulsively in hot water, often for hours at a time, as it can relieve symptoms.
In a third, recovery phase, abstinence from cannabis reduces symptoms within a few days or months. Eventually, they will completely disappear.
The existence of CHS was a mystery to clinicians until very recently. Patients with CHS frequently appear in emergency departments and are often tested unnecessarily for a wide variety of conditions, misdiagnosed with cyclic vomiting syndrome or assigned nonspecific gastrointestinal conditions.

I have only heard about this recently, so I think that maybe it has something to do with the strength being many times stronger than years ago or possibly something in the weed, herbicides or pesticides. In any case, way back in the 60’s and 70’s when I occasionally partook, and knew a bunch of hippies who were constantly stoned, other than a minute or so of coughing, never anything as extreme as “scromiting”.
We were treating CHS back in 2014 2015. It is a neurological syndrome and showering is a way to override the neurological system to stop the vomiting. Once the neurological system reorganizes, the vomiting begins again.
The syndrome lasts as long as canibanoid product remains in the system. Up to about 30 days. I have seen addicts go through a few rounds of this. Marijuana is powerful and poorly understood.
No. Not about amount. About neurological sensitivity. And occurs out of the blue. Short time or long time users. Modera or heavy user’s. Read my previous post for more information.

True. The difference is Alcohol biological is well understood down to the molecular level. Marijuana and its derivatives is not.
This affects a very small amount of individuals. However research is showing that about 10% of the using population become seriously addicted. Similar stats to Alcohol. Think poor functioning to unable to function.
I recall people in the early 70s blowing Marijuana smoke into the faces of babies small children and dogs.

Big Pharma and Big Tobacco are helping market high-potency, psychosis-inducing THC products as your mother’s ‘medical marijuana’
Follow my lead, gentlemen. A couple of months ago I confessed to my wife that I had a substance addiction. She asked to what. I eyed her up and down and responded that she is the “substance”.
Yeah.
You win Spot the Pothead.
Oh yeah.
Pot has always been anti-emetic. It was one of the ruses used to legalize it that it would be used medicinally, eg to help with chemotherapy nausea side effects.
Now legal and distributed in so many ingestible forms it is overdosed and down regulates the very system that was the effector for the antiemetic properties.
Chronic alcohol use and chronic marijuana use are both dangerous for human consumption. If you’ve seen the effects of long term alcohol use( big honking red nose, slurring of speech, bad memory, significant liver disease, car accidents, debilitation, heart disease, etc) you may not think it is less harmful the marijuana.
We are now finding out the long term effect of MJ effects... won’t be good either.
Ya’ think chronic drug abusers have a death wish?

Not arguing that.
Jeez. Products for vaping and edibles with over 70% THC. No wonder people are having problems coughing, puking, hallucinating, pains. This stuff should be banned.
“...but to the extent that this is even a real syndrome and not some made-up BS, I would imagine one would have to ingest a ridiculous amount of cannabis to achieve this...”
And why would you imagine anything at all about the condition if you don’t think it exists. In other words, you just pull it out of your ass and believe it.
I have been around dopers, and it is a scourge. Just maybe, you have the discipline to use it and escape some of the negative side effects, but there are multitudes who don’t.
Ignorant, ill, and impaired is the hat trick for Deep State.
Sounds like fun. 🙄
Kinda makes you want to give it a try.
Well, compulsive bathing was a big surprise!
