If you were a victim of the WEP, were you fully reimbursed? (vanity)

If you are a retired police officer, fireman, or teacher, and also paid into Social Security prior to Jan 2024, it's likely the government still owes you money. The WEP was eliminated on 01/05/2025, and the government issued reimbursements to people who were affected by the WEP going back to 01/01/2024. But, if you retired between April 21, 1983, and December 31, 2023, what about all that time? In some cases, that could amount to tens of thousands of dollars. Do some research, and don't let the government off the hook. You were robbed! Determine if you were affected by this, and call your congressman and tell them you want ALL the money back they stole from you, and not just going back to 01/01/2024. Please share this with any retired fireman, police officer, or teacher you know. The government may owe them serious money.

Anyone in a public union should not be getting social security.

Assuming they paid in, why not?

Mrs. R2 got a $11,554 backpay distribution and her SS bennies went from $11.00 per month to $853.00 Thanks WEP!!!

If she retired before Jan 2024, and paid into SS before then, they likely owe her even more.

No need to define your acronyms, or anything. Every FReeper has heard of Wireless Encryption Protocol.

Do you mean this thread isn't about Women's Equality Pay, or Women's Empowerment Principles?

The only time she paid into Social Security was back in the 70s when she was working part-time jobs and later about three years worth of minimum wage jobs after she retired. So really her Social Security wages throughout her career were very very low.

The WEP elimination law only affects Jan 1, 2024 forward. Years before that are history unless a new law is passed, which won’t happen. It was a payoff to teacher’s unions and some others.

They are already getting compensated by taxpayers by collecting a pension.

What planet are you from? They are getting compensated from the money they PAID IN over the years.

You lost me there. How could it be a payoff to teachers unions?

Teachers unions are made up of teachers and retired teachers. The union has harped on the WEP for years. Do you think that individual retired teachers were the ones doing the lobbying for the WEP repeal? Same applies to firefighters, police, and any others that had retirement systems while not paying into Social Security.

How do you think SS works.
Only we don’t get to bargain with taxpayer money.
You are obviously in a public union.
We are going to have different views on this.
I am from this planet. I just don’t suck up taxpayer money.

To my knowledge, if you were a teacher but didn't pay into SS, you didn't collect from SS. In computing my wife's numbers, if she hadn't paid in, she wouldn't get a dime. However, many teachers, firefighters, police, etc DID pay into SS the same time they were paying into their other systems. These are the people the government decided to rob. I certainly do hope the unions helped these people get the money they were deserved. But, many of them didn't.

I know exactly how SS works. If you would like, I can direct you to a few websites that can show you how to compute your primary insurance amount (PIA) and any other adjustments. It's all based on the highest 35 years of your SS contributions. And, if you didn't pay in enough, you get nothing. And, no, I was never a member of a "union."

Then you don’t know how corrupt public unions are.
Are you aware that some public union members don’t collect social security because of their pension?
I don’t think that is a bad thing.
No need to direct me anywhere.
I can give you plenty of examples of union double dippers.

They don't collect social security because they didn't pay into it. They, and/or their employer, paid all their retirement into their pension instead.
