The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

Bookmarked! *BUMP*
Thanks! I am adding WAY more cutting flowers to my garden beds next season.
Two books I own that I drool over from time to time are:
‘Cut Flower Garden’ and ‘The Flower Farmer.’

Clivia is a tropical perennial whose vibrant orange, yellow, or pink flowers resemble those of an amaryllis but are much smaller. The flowers grow in clusters of 12 to 20. The plant is also known as clivia lily, fire lily, bush lily, and natal lily.
This South African native is most often grown as a houseplant in the United States because it doesn’t tolerate direct sunlight or frost. Clivia is toxic to humans and pets.
Here’s what you need to know about growing Clivia.

Keep this one in your back pocket for the upcoming Cold & Flu season!

Good winter morning...hope you are warm and cozy...my 10 yr old Clivia has bloomed once...we had to stick it outside for the summer while we gutted and remodeled our house...and basically forgot about it. Finally brought it back in during Fall and it bloomed beautifully the next year, but not since. Suppose I should repeat that next year!
The solution is simple: you need to gut and remodel your house annually.

I just started getting my seeds in the mail.
I ordered them late enough to get next year’s seeds and early enough to get them.
I still have to mulch the garlic. The problem is, the snow keeps me from seeing where I did it already, and when the ground is bare, the winds pick up to the point where I can’t lay down the straw without it blowing all over the garden before I can weigh it down.
Interesting about Clivia. Never knew but seeing a picture, we have a huge one in our church.
Real nice temps here. -42 in the flats but only -30 up here on the hill!
I had the most beautiful Christmas Cactus blooming this year! I’ve had it since it was just 3 little sprigs about 4 years ago and only had gotten one or two flowers a year...BUT THIS year it gave forth 33 buds and only two or three didnt bloom...was absolutely breathetaking...I hope I have this plant for years to come...
Here is a view of one of the Christmas displays at the Longwood Gardens in Kennet Square, Pennsylvania,
which has fabulous greenhouse and garden tours throughout all the seasons:

And here is just one display in the Fantasy of Lights at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia,
which has lush gardens of both edibles and ornamentals all year long:

After today, I have more room in the garage for gardening purposes in front of those big windows. Mom wanted to donate the two big old recliners that took up a lot of space along that wall. The recliners were too big to get on my handcart. I ended up ‘horsing’ them over to the trailer ramp at the expense of my back, then I put cardboard on the ramp (slick) & winched them aboard with a big cable winch. I had used that winch once before over a year ago & it took me a while to figure it out again, but once the light bulb went off, it worked like a charm. Fortunately, Habitat for Humanity ReStore was open for donations because I knew they had MEN who could unload those recliners ... one scrawny young guy who was stronger than he looked initially and two big guys who looked like football players. Goodbye recliners, so grateful I never have to see or deal with them ever again!!

61 - 17 = 54 degree drop in 24 hours - insane
We'll have our first spell of ice here Sunday night into Monday morning. I'm off until Jan 2nd and go back the 3rd.
So my new rig broke. Just driving along and acted like I bumped it into neutral which I didn't. 1 2 3 D R all got nothing. I was hoping this Trailblazer wasn't one of those that tend to do that or that it had already happened and a previous owner had the transmission rebuilt. No such luck. The new tires and other parts will last quite a while now.
Back to the old Focus with electrical issues. It did good today. I went to walmart and got a second battery. I need one for the tractor anyway at some point. Bought some new spark plugs for it when I was out and just finished putting them in. It had the original plugs in it according to the Motorcraft name and part number on them. Idles nicer. Gonna go visit the neighbor up the road for a 'test drive'.
Song for a Winters Night - Gordon Lightfoot
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRIlTvYp0ok
One of my very favorite songs, especially this time of year. I like Sarah McLachlan’s very different version, but always end up back with Gordon :-)
I love Gordon’s version, too. The song is absolutely haunting.
If I move to the country I want to be several houses off the main road and able to see the town lights 2 or 3 miles away at night! I am at the point where I just bite the bullet and have someone else fix my cars. (Including oil changes.)
Ice storm means free firewood. Or more correctly, firewood for the cost of the gas and oil for your Chainsaw!
The cold is going to move through here tonight and tomorrow, but I do not think there will be much rain and very little snow.
