Short answer: No, she doesn’t appear to have taken large or obvious direct pharmaceutical-industry PAC money in her 2022 campaign.
Caveat: She did have individual donors employed by pharma (e.g., Astellas exec). That’s fairly common in U.S. campaigns and doesn’t necessarily mean “pharma company gave the campaign a large sum.”
Why people might suspect pharma influence: Her background is relevant — she lobbied for the pharmaceutical industry, so politically she has ties to pharma, but the financial records don’t clearly show “big pharma PAC dumped hundreds of thousands into her campaign.”
As early as 2019, when Makki first ran for FL-13, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) called her out as a “drug company lobbyist.”
The “in Big Pharma’s pocket” claim seems to originate partly from political opposition (DCCC) and partly from a real professional history: Makki did work as a healthcare lobbyist, including for a major pharma company (Novo Nordisk).
But there’s no public evidence (from my deep dive) showing she received significant corporate or PAC money from pharmaceutical companies in her 2022 campaign, which makes the “paid off by Big Pharma” narrative much less concrete.
So, the rumor seems to be more about her background and past employment than about her campaign being bankrolled by pharma.
