The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

The ditch is a lot deeper than it looks, probably waist high. I did need the 24" extension.
Anyone using a good plant ID app they would recommend? I had one but the adds became so obnoxious it became unusable.
Q; That looks a lot safer!
One of our gardener-FReepers suggested “Picture It” a little while back, and it correctly identified a couple plants for me. I didn’t notice too many ads, but, Brave Browser might have been killing some for me. Then again, maybe the ads get more numerous if one has been using such an app for a while?
Thanks. I have a feeling Picture It was the one I dropped...but I will check.
LOVE IT! Well done, Q!
Beautiful! That makes me breathe a sigh of RELIEF that your Mom isn’t crossing the road to get the mail anymore! Yay!
How will you decorate it for Christmas? What kind of flowering vine will you plant on it come spring?
LOL! - Just kidding! :)
First of all, Q: The book ‘Stone Soup’ would be another great veggie-related gift for all of those kids in your life.
Stone Soup: An Old Tale
Children’s book by the American author Marcia Brown
Stone Soup: An Old Tale is a 1947 picture book written and illustrated by Marcia Brown and published by Charles Scribner’s Sons. It is a retelling of the Stone Soup folk tale. Three soldiers make a soup using water and stones. Each villager contributes an ingredient to the soup, creating a feast. The book was a recipient of a 1948 Caldecott Honor for its illustrations.
Note: There are quite a number of editions of this book
And, I found a recipe for the soup, too!

I remember that story/book :-) I like barley a lot, will have to give this a try.
I’ve always thought those roadside boiled peanuts would be a good gig further North for a hot snack when it’s chilly out.
No need to change mascots, but Harry is a frequent subject of my photos, mostly down at the Gulf, but sometimes here if I can get a clear shot of him at my creek. He is a good spokesman for who I am. I have a sunny, beachy vibe, and I’ve added a Midwestern locale to my livable range. They are both a strong part of me.
*** OH! That crystal clear water! :)***
The water was crystal clear for 3 days in a row! I can’t believe I got to see (and swim in) such beautiful water without leaving the US border. With sugar white sand, too. (Aquamarine was my favorite Crayola crayon color as a kid, and that hasn’t changed over the years.) I’m gonna need a day or two to shake the sand from my suitcase this time. It was a blessing to have 4 of us siblings (there were 6 of us) get along so well for so many days. (Anybody else from a large family get my drift on that?)
The thing that gets me back on track for the Midwest was flying in a commercial airliner with a bunch of people watching college football (several different games) watching their teams make great plays (yips, yahoos, and loud clapping for TD’s) or others groaning audibly with plays that didn’t go the way they had hoped. Even the hyper kids were drowned out by the adults. It is nice to have Hoosiers paying attention to college football for a change. They don’t usually care until basketball season.
So far as I can tell, nothing super huge bad happened while we were gone. We will talk with the neighbors tomorrow.
Indiana: “Welcome home, FF!”
Me: “Can you give me a few days to adjust?”
Too cute!
I use the “Picture This” app, but I don’t have any ads, so I’m not sure what you’re seeing. I use the free version, but ads don’t seem to pop up for me…yet. That may be on the horizon for me.
The stink eye!
🤣
You just made my day!
My kids performed “Stone Soup” in their parochial grade school every year, right around Thanksgiving. It is a family favorite.
“With a stone in my pocket, and love in my heart, I have all I need.” (Hand gestures included.)
That’s a good idea! Maybe you and I can educate those North of the Mason-Dixon line with a few southern type offerings. (Pretty sure they wouldn’t go over in Indiana…YET! Kentucky maybe.)
I brought home a second package of green peanuts with me. That is part of my day tomorrow to get them on the stove and watch over them. I will freeze about half of them, maybe a little more.
I’m telling y’all the truth, I have transformed my da*n Yankee husband into a Southern gentleman. He eats boiled peanuts (and likes them!) and says “tump” because I have educated him to proper Southern expressions. Now he knows to say “pie” when referring to dessert instead of pizza. When he means pizza, he says pizza, unless he’s back on Long Island with his family.
They actually carry canned boiled peanuts here and they seem to sell pretty well. They’re not half bad either.
I made some years ago in FL but they sold raw peanuts there. Never seen them here but I’m sure they’re available in bulk online. Growing them has crossed my mind on occasion.
No no no to canned boiled peanuts! C’mon man!
No self respecting Southerner would eat (or serve) canned boiled peanuts, any more than they would make instant grits. However, I will give a bit of grace here. I TOTALLY understand the desperation when there aren’t many good options. Most of the time, we just have to live without. 😟
I’m lucky that I get to go back down South and get raw peanuts while I’m there. This time, we packed an insulated backpack into one of our checked bags, loaded it with reusable ice packs, and raw/green peanuts, among other things. Don’t let that good food go to waste if you can help it!
P.S. I forgot to address you trying to grow them. I bet you could! Nothing ventured, nothing gained!
