The Garden Thread - October, 2025
October 1, 2025 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 10/01/2025 5:23:58 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

Wow! It’s not even that cold up here, yet! I have been covering the lettuces I have started in a planter on the porch at night, though.

The rest of the garden is just a ‘recovery mission’ at this point in time; I have to have it pretty much cleaned up and mulched in before the 23rd when Aunt Alice shows up for inspection.

You think I’m kidding? She is a formidable life long farmer/gardener! Aunts somehow feel OBLIGATED to kick your butt when they can, LOL! :)

Yep. The Farm Market sellers around here never wash their eggs (I don't either) and in my many travels to Sunny Mexico years back, there were always eggs out on the counter for purchase in the Bodegas.

Lately, I have been lusting after a wooden egg rack for the kitchen. It would save some room in the fridge:

Here is an interesting one from Southern Exposure: Southern Exposure Noir des Carmes Muskmelon

"(Orange Flesh) 76 days. [Pre-1787, named for the Carmelite monks in France who grew it.] A wonderfully aromatic true cantaloupe with sweet flavor. The 2-3 lb ribbed fruits have a helpful ripeness indicator: over 24-48 hours the greenish-black rinds suddenly turn yellow and green, signaling their readiness!"

Not sure this will ever be seen in Modern Grocery store due to its appearance.

I’ve often mused over a couple of rarities that Thomas J grew at Monticello.

It was 39° at 7 AM, but no freeze or frost despite forecast. Looks like flowers for another week!

It got to 38 here but I threw a sheet on top of my in ground shishitos and a few nearby flowers. Things looked unscathed this morning. Most of my potted herbs and a few select potted plants came in to the sunroom overnight. Once it hit 50 I took them back outside.

I’ve been letting Howard come into the house on a “drive-by” basis. When he’s out and I need to grab something from inside I let him come along. When it’s time to get his cup of dog food he comes with me, etc. He’s been doing pretty well with that in terms of not destroying everything he sees.

Last night, after he finished his supper and the “I’m so lonesome” wailing began, I let him come inside to see how he’d do while we were relaxing in front of the boob tube.

He nosed around for a bit, said hello to the cats, stole some stuff out of Booger’s toybox, nosed a bit more, then crawled up onto the couch and made himself at home on my lap. I have 2nd degree burns on my face from Mrs. Augie giving me the stink eye from the other end of the couch. lol

He’s a pretty happy guy these days, but I think that may have been peak happy for him. He watched tv some, took a nap, watched more tv. Howard got lots of pets and I got lots of kisses. When he finally started to get restless I took him outside and put him to bed. Didn’t hear a WOOOO-WOOOO from him the rest of the night.

I’ve signed up for a couple TWC groups on facebook over the past couple months and I’m finding that a lot of people have TWCs that live in the house all the time and are apparently very well behaved there. So maybe there’s hope for him yet.

I’m going to clear a spot in my grouch cave and set up a crate over the weekend. Next week we’ll get started with crate training on the days that I work from home.

MwH. It does! Doctors in the early 1900s and before used to prescribe sauerkraut or sauerkraut juice for illness. It has a high vitamin C content.

We do the same thing with the juice from Mrs. Augie's fermented pickles. Lots of nutrients in that stuff and it's loaded with probiotic bacteria. Very good for your gut health.

That sounds so nice! After such a nice evening you know he will be howling to do it again tonight. Mrs. Augie - Howards a lover.

I saw that on X and by using a white store bought egg and a brown egg from her chickens and mentioning chlorination, she confused a LOT of people. She got screamed at by angry people who thought she was trying to convince people that all eggs start out brown and the chlorine makes them white. LOL

One yelled at her that brown and red chickens lay brown eggs and white chickens lay white eggs. Not true at all of course. There are brown chickens that lay white eggs and white chickens that lay brown eggs.

I grew some Tennis Ball Lettuce last fall, or tried to. It’s one that he grew.

I figure there’s a reason people have grown particular varieties for such a long time.

Older family and older people in general. When the engineer came out to see about us getting a phone line here. I mentioned we only had the place for a matter of weeks and mentioned the work in progress driveway. I got through half the first sentence and as soon as the word driveway came out of my mouth, he interrupted and barked "it needs to be wider".

Thought it was kinda rude since he worked for the company I'd be spending money with but he was just a good ole boy hard ass. And yes, to this day, my driveway could be a little wider.

Today is The Day .... all of my bushes/plants are in the ground! I am not going to know what to do with myself without something that needs planting hanging over my neck like a guillotine (just kidding). I still need to mulch tomorrow, but that doesn’t count because no hole digging is required.

No company this week (week before we had company 3 days, one was a dinner/overnight/breakfast) so that has been a break. I did make a trip Wednesday to a town over the mountain for a new Clyde battery & got it installed yesterday, then mowing ensued.

I will be reworking & reprioritizing my project list, but with the weather starting to turn, the outside projects are getting fewer. I need to figure out the wood stove in the shop for this winter.
