Is it better to shower in the morning or at night?
BBC ^ | Sept 21, 2025 | Jasmin Fox-Skelly

Some people prefer to shower in the morning, others in the evening. Who is doing it the right way?

In this increasingly polarised world we live in, there is one question that perhaps divides us more than any other – do you shower first thing in the morning, or last thing at night? Or perhaps you are one of the 34% of the American population who do not shower daily.

Whichever camp you belong to, you may wonder what impact your choice has on your health.

Showering at night or in the morning: Each has its advantages and disadvantages. I solved that by showering at both times, and also many times during the work day.

That's a whole other subject: the soap we use on our bodies.

I've tried to find phosphate-free soaps, which is better on the skin. But it's not easy. Grandpa Soap Company has several phosphate-free products, but you pay for them.

I live in Florida.

Substantial sweating is normal for about eight months of the year.

I shower before bedtime.

Same for Houston, where I lived for a couple of years. I stayed wet all day from the shower until November.

I had a barber who said he took several showers a day.

Might have a body odor problem.

Come home sweaty dirty and stinking after work and then go to bed or shower first doesn’t seem like a hard question.

Again, it depends on what you do all day.

My system tested negative for chlorine when a water softener
salesman tested the tap. He was confused because he knew the
local water authority did use chlorine.

I don’t know the solution

I think vitamin c deactivates chlorine. There are accessories you can connect to your shower that add vitamin c to the water.

I had a boss that would wake up hung over from the night before, every morning. He once commented about my wet hair in the morning, and said I should shower at night, like he did. I said it wouldn’t matter, because I’d gone out and run a few miles before work, and I’d have to shower again, anyway. He looked at me like I was insane.

In the immortal words of Redd Foxx, you can go two or three days without washing your armpits, but you got to wash your a-hole everyday.

I was an RN. Best twice, sometimes 3x a day. Have a couple extra scrubs for tough days and change of clothes...never know.

When I did construction it was once in evening but hot days we’d continuously douse with water...oh and surfing before and after work.
Change your sheets? Bahhh!

Lou Grant had a funny bit on that, in one episode, about how his schedule changed since he got a girlfriend.
