Dem-run city’s iconic mall teeters on collapse as 93% of stores vacant after crime-wave causes stores to flee

READ MORE: Future of mall favorite's 1.4k shops in the air as buyer swoops in

Shops in San Francisco's most iconic mall can't catch a break.

The San Francisco Centre, once a shining beacon of economic strength featuring a multi-level golden spiral staircase and ornate Corinthian columns, has been snowballing into oblivion.

Shops have been closing for years. Owners have stopped paying their rent. Auctions for the building's sale have been continually postponed.

And now, 93 percent of the mall's 1.56 million square feet of retail is vacant.

At its peak, more than 200 stores attracted deal-seeking shoppers, but today, the mall's directory only lists 27 open stores.

Officials have blamed the iconic mall's downturn on pandemic lockdowns, rampant retail theft, and concerns about homelessness.

Opening its doors in 1988, the structure was a nine-story building with multiple flagship stores, and created a San Franciscan phrase, 'Meet me under the Dome.'

In 2009, the mall won a best-of-the-best award from the International Council of Shopping Centers.

However, cracks in the iconic structure's surface appeared in 2023, when Nordstrom, its largest store, decided to close.

Will crime get worse in Dem-run cities?

Yes No Not sure Westfield, America's largest chain of malls, stopped paying its $558million mortgage quickly after.

That started a dam break that has seen more than 100 stores close. This year alone has seen Zara, Milk Tea, and Michael Kors shutter their locations in the shopping center.

'We are hopeful to be back to serve the San Francisco community in the future,' a Macy's spokesperson said in January while announcing Bloomingdale's was shutting down its five-story location 21 years before the end of the lease.

“This is why we can’t have nice things…”

It’s not the economy, the adoption of e-commerce, the plan-demic, global warming, or any other nonsensical excuse.

It’s law and order. Get rid of the homeless (persons doing drugs, defacating on the sidewalk, living in the stairwells, etc.), fight crime, punish crime, and drive that effort to the surrounding area. Or, file Chapter 7 and see a local example of a third world country taking root.

Democrats build nothing, but they are superb at destroying things. In fact, they have been destroying everything their hands touch.

What do you think “Build Back Better” means?

Now why is it people vote for Democrats again?

Indeed

Collapse as 93% of stores vacant after crime-wave causes stores to flee.

It would make great free housing for illegal aliens, and taxpayers can pay the bills.

San Francisco Centre opened in 1988. “Mannequin” was released in 1987. The mall scenes were filmed in Pennsylvania (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mannequin_(1987_film))

Turn it in to an open air drug den and homeless shelter.

yes, it really dis, but that was built before Democrats had gained absolute control of Ca., and they no longer had need for pretense. Instead, they spent money on keeping their corruption & control. Which is why Ca. has turned into a rathole.

I presume that is figurative and not that the building itself is disintegrating.

a bus stop to be placed at one of the entrances. The place quickly became unsafe.

“MGM in Springfield, MA”

I had high hopes for that place—it is the closest casino to northwest CT.

I visited once and thought it was awful. I even wrote MGM a long letter explaining exactly what they had done wrong.

Location: ghetto adjacent

Parking Lot: dangerous

Grounds: Very tiny areas and potentially dangerous

Gambling area: everything squashed into tiny area—feels like being in a sardine can

The state made them build it in Springfield instead of Palmer.

They should have walked away....

Mohegan and Foxwoods are a thousand times better.

Excavate it and build a prison/housing facility to incarcerate all the libertarians, dope addicts, alcoholics, career bums and fugitives from justice. Kill two birds with one stone, so to speak.

My wife and I went to MGM Springfield a couple years ago.
She had one of her mutts entered in a dog show at the Big E.
We did not stay at the MGM, but had dinner in their steak house. Which was pretty good based on my memory.
I was not impressed with the casino either.

I have heard that the Encore(Boston) is very nice. I have never actually stepped foot in the place though.
It is actually in Everett, MA. They are trying to gentrify that area. Of course, it is right on the Mystic River and next to Chelsea. Which is one of the highest crime locations in the Boston area. They spent $2 Billion building the hotel. Apparently, it is beautiful inside. Full of artwork.

The thing is, IF I am going to spend a weekend in Boston. I am going to stay in the Back Bay area or right near Faniul Hall. I would not want to stay in Everett. OR Dorchester OR Mattapan, OR Roxbury.

My ex was the executive assistant to a major mall owner here in the NE.
He saw the writing on the wall over 20 yago and sold off almost 90% to Simon.
Kept a couple high value ones in the Boston area.
Those are probably sold now as well..
Smart guy....I’m sure he’s living the good life somewhere.
