Have they ever released a photo of the Rile used by Tyler Robinson?
I recently inherited a Mauser from WWII, and I'm confident that the one he used was not that style,
but I am curious as to how he carried it due to it's length.
They don't seem to be easily dis-assembled.
Was the stock cut down?
The action on my dad’s Mauser is so slick that when he holds it vertical and releases the bolt, it’ll slide clear to the back of the action. I fired it at the range and it is so smooth and dead on at 200 yds.
I believe it was the Battle of San Juan Hill where US forces , with their Krag-Jorgensen rifles came up against Spanish troops armed with Mausers. They thought they were facing machine gun fire because it was so rapid. After the war, Springfield produced, without benefit of license, the 1903, a lovely Mauser clone, which the military adopted.
“In addition, you can also see where the slide of the front ring was stopped by the objective bell of the scope, thus causing the front ring itself to slide backward.”
Excellent catch...
Sporting 30-06 Mausers were built prior to WWII. Post WWII FN built military Mauser 98s in 30-06 for Brazil, Columbia, and Chile. The accepted reason for this was the huge stock of 30-06 available as cheap surplus. FN also supplied Belgium with 30-06 Mauser 98s post WWII as i was adopted as the standard arm of the Belgin Army until they adopted the FN 49 in 30-06. Large stocks of Belgian 98 ‘06s were also sold to other foreign countries. Isreal converted German 98ks to 30-06 and later to 7.62 NATO.
The real sound of gunfire is difficult to record accurately as you stated. I have recorded the sound of me firing a gun with a video recorder and a very good mic and it still did not reproduce the actual deep boom of my .62 cal black powder flintlock.
In my opinion, the film Open Range with Kevin Costner was the first Western to ever realistically reproduce the sound of black powder arms and I read the sound man went to great lengths to do so.
And again, my dad’s rifle is just beautiful. Thanks for sharing. :D
30-06s are bazookas on recoil.
There were hundreds of thousands of Mauser and Springfield rifles sold as surplus after WWII. Many of them, perhaps most, ended up with “sporter conversions.” Those included cut-down or new stocks, often new barrels, and in the case of the Mauser rifles, rechambering from 8mm to 30-06 with the new barrel.
The Springfield version of the Mauser action was considered an outstanding sniper rifle in WWII when matched with a telescopic sight.
I follow a former Spec ops guy who’s job was weapons expert he said he’s field stripped that gun many times and you don’t just do it in 30 seconds.
I’ll get a picture of my dad’s Mauser I mentioned.
That resembles a Ruger. There is a model of Ruger rifle that uses the Mauser action and bolt. if memory serves.
I understand. I have disassembled bolt action rifles similar to the one in question and reassembled to find they can be reasonably accurate.
Ordinance disassembly is an entirely different matter.
After WWII, many K98 8mm Mauser’s were converted to 30-06.
I have 2 K98 German Mauser rifle, one in each caliber.
Go back and look at the video’s of his walking to and away from the shooting location. He limps to hide the rifle down his leg.
Yes, It is a heavy rifle. BUT, I have looked at the available polymer replacement stock. Some of them will take 2 lbs off the weight, and look like original (painted gray). The photo I saw looked like the barrel had been changed, it appeared to be stainless steel.
Most of stock K98’s weigh about 9 pounds, without optics, and not including ammo.
The shooter told someone it was one of a kind.
This is likely the way they mounted the scope. You cannot see the base from bolt side.

The lighting in the photo of the rifle is too poor to tell.
The photo’s that have been released were original K98 Mauser.
The safety on the photo’s that have been released are like the original.
It is not hard to modify them, changing from 8mm to 30-06.
There are other options, but that one has narrow spacing between scope rings. I looks like it.
Yeah...going from 7.92 (8mm Mauser) to 7.62 requires a barrel change.
One of a kind? Whatever. If the scope moved when the rifle was dropped from the roof, the rings weren’t tight enough; if that’s the way it was set up, the installer was .an idiot.
