'I think it's becoming very, very common,' Amy Bach, Executive Director at consumer advocacy group United Policyholders, told the outlet.
'People are getting dropped on basis of, "We see mold on your roof," or "We see damaged roof tiles," or "There's trees touching your house," risk factors that insurance companies are increasingly on the lookout for.'
Schueler found company to remove the branches in time, and so was able to keep her coverage.
'It ended up costing $1,200. I had no choice,' she told CBS.
Her policy was renewed for another year, but having her home monitored without her being notified has left a sour taste in her mouth.
A furious homeowner says her insurer used a drone to secretly photograph her house when she was out before threatening to cancel her insurance.
Lynne Schueler, from Massachusetts, said her insurer gave her weeks to trim back some trees on her property or it would end her policy, despite her being a customer with the company for more than a decade.
'It was very invasive, because they had taken a picture of my house without me knowing, which was really kind of crazy,' she told CBS News.
'I wasn't home because my car wasn't in the driveway.'
Schueler said she received an email with an aerial surveillance photo of her home and a message which said she had just six weeks to remove some tree branches hovering over her house.
She was reticent to cut branches off a 'beautiful tree' in her yard, and nervous about how much it might cost to remove them
But she was also concerned about how losing her insurance might impact her mortgage.
Schueler is by no means alone, and experts are warning that this surveillance practice is becoming increasingly common among insurers.

That’s nothing. I worked on a drone project a long time ago.
It turns out it was contracted by the Austrian government to monitor all property in the cities. They would spy on everyone and everything. If you even put up a flower pot without government approval you got a knock on the door.
Easier to terrorize the compliant citizens while they allowed an invasion of Islamists to take over the country. 10% of Austria is an imported muslim and they are breeding like rabbits.
My tenants had a trampoline in the yard. I received a notice that if it was not removed, my insurance could be canceled. I wonder if it was a drone that found this “violation“.
If you have credit cards, auto loans and mortgages, the lenders are spying on you via credit reports and other methods. They scan arrest records, bankruptcy records and etc. to formulate their pricing..
They aren’t coming to my house without permission. Do you really have no boundaries?
You are not a real California NGO, unless you and your friends family are not stealing from it for salaries, fake travel expenses and other bennies.
They don’t just fly over. They come right down to the level of the eves and take a photo straight across the roof at shingle level. They always seem to do it when no one is home, but my guess is that they get lower than that.
How do you know that no permission was given?
Really? My insurance company scans my credit reports, driving records, and whatever public records they can gather to offer me a periodic insurance rate.
“””My insurance company hasn’t inspected my roof. Ever. And trees grow over the tops of roofs all the time. As dangers go, that one is pretty minor.”””
You probably do not live in Florida. It is pretty commonplace for insurance companies to inspect.
You should be happy to live where roofs and trees next to a house are not an issue.
“You probably do not live in Florida. It is pretty commonplace for insurance companies to inspect.”
My brother has had two.
The first resulted in a free electrical panel upgrade.
The second, replacing kitchen faucet due to a corroded fitting.
A few years ago I was required to send in exterior photos.
“”””Amazes me that some many on this thread are OK with companies spying on them without permission””””
I am not OK with companies spying on me.
In this case the insurance companies are making sure that a house they are insuring is a good risk. They do not want to insure a house with a bad roof with 30 year old shingles and then have pay a claim when a little windstorm comes through.
When insurance companies pay claims, an unfortunate result is that every policy holder sometimes get a rate increase.
“They aren’t coming to my house without permission. Do you really have no boundaries?”
Where are you coming from? No mention of this.
Then they can schedule an appointment like in the past.
They cannot just come to your house without an appointment, but you are OK with them flying a drone over your house and spying.
“They cannot just come to your house without an appointment, “
Then, why were you worried enough to make that post?
Because they are flying drones WITHOUT PERMISSION over people’s houses. Do you even read the article?
I am a realist. Also tons of businesses have closed circuit TV watching you everywhere, just saying. I can’t change it, neither can you. If you don’t like it, I guess there are wildernesses to live in.
Start your own insurance company (self insure) and then you can argue with your one policy holder ...
