The price of joining a college sorority is climbing nationwide, with some recruits paying tens of thousands of dollars for coaching, outfits, registration fees and housing to vie for spots in the country's most coveted chapters.
As Rush Week kicked off this month, the recruitment process is drawing renewed attention, fueled by the viral "RushTok" trend on TikTok and pop culture portrayals of Greek life, including the HBO documentary "Bama Rush" and Lifetime’s "A Sorority Mom’s Guide to Rush!"
"Costs and expectations have increased with the viral exposure coming from TikTok, TV shows and documentaries," said Michael Ayalon, CEO and founder of Greek University, a Tennessee-based speaking and consulting business for fraternities and sororities.

One for the snobby girls, one for the party girls, and one for the overweight girls.
$20,000 is ridiculous to pay.
Our 2 daughters were accepted in university of Washington sorority without any expense.
Most of it is liability insurance. When a local chapter lost their charter, they just continued on. No dues, no rules and the school had no influence over them. Fraternities now have a frat house and a party house.
Sorority life was so much better than dorm life.
I wasn’t willing to put up with the fraternity garbage in university. I did go through freshman rush to confirm that I wasn’t interested.
There were plenty of other groups on campus where one could party and make friends.
I spent two years of my college experience living in a Frat House, some of my best friends in the world were made in that house, I would no trade that time for anything
Kappa Sigma - AEKDB
My fraternity cost in the early 1980’s
$100 initiation fee = $400 today
$25 monthly dues = $100 today
We would occasionally have a “party fee” of $10 if we were having a particularly extravagant soiree.
I was also able to rent my room for $75 a month or $300 a month in today’s dollars. I was supposed to share it for that amount, but I snored...badly...and no one could stand it. There was a bit of a disagreement because I had an oversized room and they insisted I share or move to another room. The only brothers willing to move into the house and take my room had a higher roll number than I did, so I pulled rank.
Oh...I forgot...
Beta, thou art ever glorious. Thy bonds are sweet, thy service joy.

I was in Tappa Nu Keg.
“Chi O....Chi O....it’s off to bed we go.....”
Considering the spread of Pride month and Juneteenth among others, we should schedule our own Rush Week, to remember the one who kept us going for three decades, but could not live to see the MAGA dawn.

. Extravagant? Is that when you upgraded the keg from Mwaukees Best to Busch light? 😎😎🕺
My fraternity was Naval Aviation. Best experiences, best friends. None better.
A fellow Beta!
I rather enjoyed living in a fraternity house, met some great fellows.

I went through rush week once. It was not for me. I would have had to let my Dad pay a lot of money for me to get stuck in a sorority house with 60 girls I had to pretend to like. Plus put up with a bunch of hazing as a pledge.
Then one of my best friends since 4th grade got to be President of AOP and was trying to get me to pledge in second year. She promised I wouldn’t have to go through any of the pledge stuff. But I never could force myself to do it.
I wouldn’t encourage my child to do it.
Your post cracked me up. Remember the Omega Mu’s from Revenge of the Nerds?

ditto ... in the early 70’s ... went to exactly one rush and it was a filthy dump with a kegger going full blast and drunks staggering about all over ... no thanks ...
