Las Vegas is experiencing a notable downturn in tourism, with hotel occupancy, visitor numbers and spending all slipping.
Industry data points to several key reasons behind the shift, including rising costs, fewer international travellers, and broader economic uncertainties.
Drop in international visitors and hotel occupancy
According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, hotel occupancy dropped to just 66.7% in early July—a sharp fall from the previous year—and international visitors.
Domestic arrivals also fell by around 6.5%, and traffic through Harry Reid International Airport declined nearly 4% overall.

I am not sure that is the problem.
Other places are still crowded.
I went to Italy last October in the OFF season and it was packed with Americans.
I just watched a YouTube video last week and Rome was packed with Americans and it was over 100 degrees and humid there.
I am going to Bar Harbor next month. The place I am staying is sold out.
I think the issue is with Vegas.
Lemme put it this way. Wife and i go once a month.
We sit and get several beers and drinks (not top shelf) for less than ten bucks.
Got to know which place to go to.
Usually, we top the afternoon off at tge Old Town Saloon. That place you cant really get cheap drinks but we love tge place and have one and we are done.
Gal bartending there is from Vegas. She HATES, what vegas has become and will never go back. Like most of us, s h e says Vegas was really destroyed by corporate greed..the mob ran it way better.
It is often referred to as “Supply and Demand”.
Costs too much? Obtained elsewhere for less?
Sports books are universally available online
There are casinos on Indian reservations all over the nation.
Maybe there is a fixed proportion of individuals who enjoy gambling. And maybe their needs are already being met without all of the Las Vegas “overhead”.
IDK, but “supply and demand” is a pretty foundational economic principle.
IMHO, the event that killed Vegas was 9/11. Before 9/11, it was a lot easier to win at some games over a period of 1-2 hours (especially Blackjack). After 9/11, it seemed almost impossible to come out ahead after that time. And also after 9/11 things started getting expensive.
Even without online gambling, there are far more casinos around. You don’t have to go to Be ada or Atlantic City anymore. Hopefully they don’t pick up Vegas’s triple zero roulette or 6:5 blackjack.
Bathrooms include One-Armed-Bandit?
Last time I was there was in 2003 for a show. Stayed at Paris. I drove cross country to get there. Overall it was a good time but I didn’t gamble. I think I visited a half dozen times prior. I gambled a bit on those trips but the appeal of gambling in general died a quick death with me.
Very few buffets. Only Main Street Casino downtown. Strip buffets outrageous. $80 at Wynns. Card snappers that get in your face. Everyone has their hand out and expects $ for the least little thing.
Inspite of all that I still love the place. Even though all my favorite casinos have been dynamited...
Sounds about right. But safety may also be an issue.
I don’t know about Las Vegas in particular, but in general, I think the cities have become unsafe. I’m 73, retired, and live in a suburb 30 minutes north of Philly where there is zero crime. We have black people here, but they have assimilated into suburban life.
I’m never going near center city again.. too many of the blacks there are not safe to be around.
No more concerts, no more ball games for me - it’s just not worth the risk of being targeted because I’m white.
Atlantic city also went downhill. Maybe the only good casino left is the Tropicana. Even Ballys and Caesars are run down. Have not been back since 2022.
I first visited Vegas in 1959 with my parents. The Strip was still mostly desert. Stayed at the Riviera Hotel. The headliner in the main room was Red Skelton. We met him once in the elevator, quite a thing for a nine year old kid.
Not just Vegas, NYC too was better when the Mob ran things.
I agree. 9/11 screwed everything up. Nothing has been the same since.
locals don’t go to the Strip
they’re actually building more casinos and expanding existing ones in the suburbs.
Yes, back then, the entrances to the hotels/casinos were right off the sidewalk. Since then, they’ve placed them a quarter mile back, so that once you’re there, you’re trapped.
I went once about 12 years ago and stayed at the Vadara because it and the Mandarin Oriental were the two newest hotels on the strip.
I bought a round trip package flight and hotel to get a direct flight on SW. The Vadara was a very nice all suite/apartment hotel. Right between the Aria and the Bellagio, behind the Cosmopolitan.
The only memorable meal was at the top of Binions Gambling Hall in downtown at their steakhouse. The rest of the places were expensive/overpriced. Binion’s Steakhouse was like taking a step back in time. The host had been there forever.
I expected Frankie and the rest of the Rat Pack to walk in any minute.
Correct. ‘Civilians’ were left alone...................
Ha ha free drinks! They come up and ask if you want free drinks and they make you wait 20 minutes to bring it to you. I have run out of money more than once while waiting for a drink. When you do get one you should ask for bottle beer or they will bring you something that resembles a cocktail but has no alcohol in it. Besides that, you are expected to tip the waitress who made you wait for a watery drink because obviously you are winning at the machine or you wouldn’t be sitting there.
We went to Vegas years ago. We had a free room for 3 nights. I have to say that the savings for not paying for a room were maybe 300 bucks. But every single thing was a hundred bucks. Breakfast? A hundred bucks. Fortunately that was for two. Same with lunch. Dinner? A hundred bucks. Each. Show tickets? A hundred bucks each. Basically it was six hundred bucks a day minimum. And that was 10 years ago.
We were contemplating going to see the Dome. It’s the only thing even remotely interesting in town, except for 6 different Cirque du Soliel shows and Shania Twain. We would like to see the Backstreet Boys show. Problem is it is over 400 dollars for each of us. Needless to say we won’t be doing that. And it has nothing to do with Donald Trump. We just don’t want to spend the money so quickly.

Yes, and the ‘overhead’ of any city venue increasingly includes lack of safety.
I don’t know about Vegas in particular, but the random black-on-white violence in inner cities has got to be suppressing demand. I know I’m avoiding inner cities like the plague.
He is full of shit.
He has no clue.
