Everybody was shocked — shocked! — when Stephen Colbert announced this week that CBS canceled “The Late Show.”
The despondent media reacted like a meteor was about to smash into Earth.
But how surprising was Colbert’s kibosh really?
Did peoples’ jaws also hit the floor when Blockbuster Video called it quits in 2014?
Were they muffling their screams when blimps were phased out for air travel in 1937?
“What do you mean ‘no more silent films’?!”
The end of “The Late Show” was every bit as writ-in-stone as any of those predictable downfalls.
And it’s not only Colbert. The Grim Reaper is coming for all of late-night TV. Those comedians in neckties are just ignoring Death’s deafening knock.
The retro programs, which began in the 1950s as an experiment to fill time, have far too tiny a viewership to justify their exorbitant cost anymore.
The Post reported Friday that Colbert’s talk show was losing $40 to $50 million per year. The Times watered down those figures to mere “tens of millions.”
Awfully hard to blame Trump for that.
True, “The Late Show” was beating the competition with 2.42 million nightly viewers on average during the first quarter. But just 9% of those eyeballs were in the 18-49 demo that advertisers covet.
That means no ad dollars because young people couldn’t care less.

Regular tv has about 20 minutes of commercials per hour. Why bother with that when there are so many streaming services?
Plus, who wants to watch him babble about ORANGE MAN BAD constantly?
I was SHOCKED and my jaws also hit the floor when I saw that I did not water the rose flowers today.
Fewer people are staying up that late to watch that ... stuff.
Kimmel is next if Disney knows in two years they are looking at a Vance Presidential win Kimmel will be asked nicely to “retire”
meanwhile, Gutfeld is killing it
It costs less than $1 million to operate Joe Rogan's Podcast. So you're telling me that it costs $100 million just for Stephen Colbert to rant about Trump? 🤔
It’s been over 50 years since the “rural purge” in television. What would a “late night purge” bring about?
Wait until they take a close look at how much money the news divisions are loosing. They’ve hidden those costs since forever.
Put the Honeymooners and the Odd Couple back on.
Kimmel should go full minstrel. Host the show in blackface and call himself Assinio.
Lots of other choices out there.
Colbert was operating like it was 1990.
Sorry dude, people have moved on.
Here’s the deal: If it were funny, people would watch.
I know I am a curmudgeon, but I have never seen that late night stuff.
Only posts about it inform me it exists, that it is a few guys that need to be smacked around.
I guess Johnny Carson is long gone?
"I didn't know Davy Crockett was so fat."
"To such a man, and only such a man, would I entrust my Fortune."
"Who hit me in the head with the bat?"
Ah, to no longer be the only person in the room who understands the references.
LOL- so the party that promoted and advocated for “cancel culture” is now upset because one of their own got- wait for it now- cancelled....
File this one under what comes around goes around....
In the old days, I’d fall asleep with the lasting image of Angie Dickenson in my mind.
Today lasting images of Princess Gray Beaver or Hitlery just don’t bring me sweet dreams.
Joe Rogan doesn't have 200 people on staff to pay for. He doesn't have speech writers, music band, drink servers, make-up artists out the kazoo, etc. . . . Coal Burt insists on being pampered like he's a rock star in Vegas.
I watch METV late night Del Monroe was the man back then
9% of those eyeballs were in the 18-49 demo that advertisers covet.
For close to two decades of being in that age range, decades ago, my wife was a tv watcher and participated in surveys with some nice comps and ego boosts.
The week, she turned 50, she was dropped like a rock.
