The future of vanilla ice cream is at stake because of climate change
Yahoo! News ^ | July 4, 2025

The quintessential ice cream flavour is under threat, and many other dessert staples along with it, according to climate change researchers at the University of Costa Rica and Belgium's KU Leuven university.

Increasing climate extremes are changing the habitats of wild vanilla species — primarily found in the tropical regions of Central America — and their mainly animal pollinators, the researchers say. This, in turn, is putting global production of vanilla at risk.

In some regions, the plants may find more favourable conditions, but the insects that pollinate them may no longer find suitable habitats, according to the study published in the journal Frontiers in Plant Science in July.

The researchers used modelling to analyse the distribution areas of 11 neotropical vanilla species and seven observed bee species under two climate scenarios up to 2050: one moderate scenario with climate protection measures, and another with more conflicts and less global climate protection.

While some species could expand their potential habitats due to global warming, others face a decline of more than half. For all bee genera, the models predict a reduction in suitable habitats, with particularly severe consequences under the less climate-protective scenario.

The authors noted a limitation of their study: comprehensive information on pollination mechanisms was not available for all the species examined.

The team called for increased international collaboration and further research, aiming to enhance the resilience of vanilla cultivation and thus secure the livelihoods of many small-scale farmers in tropical regions.

Added the missing words:

From what I’ve read it has nothing to do with climate and everything to do with killing the honey bee with chemicals from Bayer and Monsanto and others.

If they really want people to panic, why don’t they just say that climate change melts ice cream.

Nobody likes a dribbling ice cream cone.

I can remember making ice cream in the summer in the late 1960s. All were in the backyard taking turns turning the handle on the ice cream machine. I learned that ice cream starts out as vanilla with other flavors added in later.

Nonsense.

Naysayers are always talking about species extinction. Nature outsmarts us on that.

For a while they were telling use that quail (bob white and Blue species) were not coming back.

This year they are making a comeback. I am working on my house at the farm again, I hear them in the background every time I am there.

There is a problem with that, the rattle snakes are all over the place too. (a neighboring field has been in CRP for many years.)

And nature is always throwing you a Mickie, scattering an unwanted weed. Right now the bad stuff is called Lizard Tail Guara. Very hard to kill out in the field.

As long as we can maintain the whiskey flavor, my wife will be happy. When we were in Portugal we ate a lot of gelato which is much more popular there than ice cream. One reason is because it has a higher melting point than ice cream. Anyway wherever you look there are stands selling gelato and my wife really enjoyed the whiskey flavored gelato. I was skeptical but it turned out to be a great flavor.

I thought most vanilla came from the Comoro Islands and Madagascar.

A few years ago, I stopped at Jeni's, Nancy Pelosi's favorite ice cream shop on 14th Street near T Street in Northwest Washington, DC and had a couple scoops of ice cream made with vanilla from a ranch in Congo-Kinshasa.

The Hockey Stick was a bald face lie, an example of how to lie with statistics and charts.

Show me cause and effect with predictions and result data using scientific method and real peer review/reproduction before scareing consumers, children and the elderly (cnn watchers) or go home.

Now global changes and cycles of weather patterns have occurred for millions of years, without your lawn mower or my 1995 ford explorer.

They grow a modified vanilla bean on the plantations in Costa Rica and the rain Forrest is covered in vanilla bean plants that grow in extremely long across the other trees , they say it grows where it wants to grow . Pretty amazing to see with your own eyes . If you get a chance to Goto Costa Rica , visit the Oso peninsula , countless mccaws , sloths, ant eaters , and 4 different kinds of monkeys ,, the amount of birds is insane .
