The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

Thanks, Pete!
Found this on Amaz0n, will have it in a few days. So cute! Now the mosquitoes and all the other bugs will be flocking around me because I'm so stinkin' adorable, LOL!
Those gnat hats, as we call them, are the ONLY way to survive summers in the SE TX swamp!
We have several in all colors. They work GREAT :D
Glad to hear it! I’ve made it to 65 years old and this is the first time I’ve needed one - and I’ve spent more time, ‘in the field’ than the normal person between the Army and hunting and camping.
So, yeah - it’s REALLY bad this season. I hate bugs.
That IS a bad pesky mosquito/gnat season. Sounds like our problem has found its way North ... I’m sorry 😩
I’ve bought several as gifts. They’re always much appreciated.
As a gift? That’s a great idea! My three BFFs are avid gardeners, too. I’ll test this one out and see if it’s gift-worthy. :)
Great videos! We have lots of yellow jackets and wasps around here, and now I’m allergic to them. I will be making these traps. Thanks for posting these!
That IS cute! Almost looks like something out of an old movie .... the ‘mysterious veiled lady”.
My bug net is an old cheapie with some camo so probably came from dad’s hunting stash. I wear it over a ball cap so the brim keeps it off my face. Looks terrible, almost embarrassing to wear it when I’m trimming next to the road & in public view .... but it WORKS & keeps the biting gnats off my face, out of my eyes, etc.
Asphalt is happening! Three big dump trucks in the driveway, machinery & lots of men working. Trucks lined up on the grass at the base of the bank - glad I mowed & trimmed all that Saturday! I can’t watch, didn’t sleep well last night. I’m trusting the contractor to not mess up too much & do it right. I noticed one of my pavers at the end of the sidewalk needs to be reset - must have gotten ‘tapped’ when they were spreading & rolling gravel. I hope it all can get done today & doesn’t run over into tomorrow.
Boric acid powder... before installing my kitchen cabinets I sprinkled boric acid powder along the walls and under the cabinets and have never seen a cockroach in my kitchen! The insulation in my walls is shredded newspaper that was soaked in boric acid. (Its also supposed to suppress fire and make it the insulation uninhabitable for vermin. I have also not seen mice inside my house.
Q. I hope you will have less dust after your new drive is finished! I do not like asphalt in the summer, but its great to have in the winter when you can shovel most of the snow off and the sun will warm it up enough to melt any remaining ice or snow.
I like the idea of the wasps taking it back to the nest.
I think my problem will be getting it where the raccoons can’t get into it and destroy it. They climb just fine. Maybe I will hang it near the bird feeders that have baffles already.
What Color Attracts the Fewest Bugs? – 2 Colors to avoid Bugs
What applies to campers works for gardeners too! (I usually use blue jeans and things like olive drab or light blue tee shirts and a boonie hat when I do yard work. )
I know...Squirrels and raccoons and oppossum, deer, bears. Good luck!
I do believe your birthday is July 24? If so, take note everyone.
Thanks, Pete!
Thank goodness we don’t have to worry about bears here. Everything else, I’ve been able to handle so far.
Souds similar to what I make, only italian sausage (precooked) and cream cheese are the main ingredients. I don’t wrap in bacon but cut a slice of bacon in thirds and lay a third on top. The wrapping never works out for me.
I would normally just ignore it, but in this case its Chocolate! Something most people love! So, Diana, Chocolate huntress! Enjoy this special day. (Its a bit far to make a run to Burlington and the Hershey's plant, but I am sure you can find product locally!)
And Here is a Chocolate Cake recipe you might like!
I am afraid that this is a "collection recipe" that I have and keep and look at it from time to time and just think about making. (Liz, maybe something for your recipe file!)
My very favorite.......chocolate pudding with whipped cream.
