One simply shows up at the welfare office, claims to be a student on limited income, and voilá, the student gets $300+/month - despite the fact they are paying $70K a year to attend a prestigious university.

This is the difference between leftists and conservatives. A leftist won’t lift a finger and help their own mother, instead letting her starve. A conservative understands that government is not supposed to be the solution to every problem. If a family member needs help, it is the responsibility of the rest of the family, first and foremost, to help. After that there are private charities that can step in and offer help, and then local community efforts. Central government should be the last solution, not the first as in the collectivist worldview.
