Jack Daniel’s maker reveals surprising reason why Americans are drinking less whiskey

Executives from Jack Daniel’s parent company, Brown-Forman Corp., warned that the business is seeing pressure from cannabis, weight-loss drugs and lackluster demand from Generation Z.

Brown-Forman CEO Lawson Whiting told analysts on an earnings call that the “same big three” is the reason that there has been lower demand for liquor.

“We’ve been saying that for 1.5 years now. And I know on the sell-side that the world seems to be a little bit split on the extent of the pressure that it’s putting on our category. We’d be naive if we didn’t say that there isn’t some pressure coming from those,” Whiting told analysts.

The economy is also playing a factor, with Whiting noting that consumers don’t have as much dispensable income and are prioritizing vacations and lodging.

They go to the grocery store, I think in some cases, spirits has fallen out of the basket a little bit.

And that isn’t obviously great,” Whiting said.

However, he said that spirits are still taking market share from beer and wine. He also noted that while premiumization isn’t the same as it was, “it’s been kind of stagnant a little bit,” which he said is mostly good news.

“I think the consumers – they haven’t traded down necessarily,” he said.

Right. And no other fruit in the beer either.

I drank a lot in my youth, very much binge drinking to extreme excess. As I have gotten older, the opportunity comes up less, and it take energy to drink.

That said, I still enjoy a good buzz from a few stiff drinks!

If you get past the peer pressure the fact is for many people alcohol just tastes terrible. Doesn’t matter how you mix it, alcohol just ruins the taste of a drink.

So for young people with access to energy drinks, sodas, and other more tasty drinks... alcohol’s only purpose is its physical effects. I’m sure recreational drugs has taken a large share of what used to be alcohol consumption.

The other day I got invited to a party
But I stayed home instead
Just me and my pal Johnny Walker
And his brothers Black and Red
And we drank alone, yeah
With nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone
I prefer to be by myself
Because I’m an alky
With a football-size liver
Yeah

“They are also more into CBD/THC usage and vaping than drinking”

A good number of breweries are getting into the seltzer and tonic markets with THC infused seltzers and tonics. The growler place we were at yesterday in a very expensive and trendy part of DFW as in multimillion dollar homes everywhere has no less the 3 out of 35 taps that where zero alcohol and THC or delta 8 based. 10mg per 8 oz serving was the largest THC concentration that is plenty enough to feel it. The wife had that in a half serving and was like wow it’s potent. She has TBI from a head injury and her neurologist routinely prescribes her THC gummies to up her appetite and cut down on the constant nausea for TBI. Her MRIs with contrast look much better after small doses of delta 9 vs pharmaceuticals she has done expensive testing and MRI scans under one of the best neurologists in North Texas.

That said about half of the 30 and under crowd was drinking tonics or seltzers and not the half dozen IPA , lagers, ciders or sours being offered so the CEO is right the younger generation prefers to not damage their livers , in oral form THC has no known liver or kidney adverse events. These are also the same yoga pants and shorts wearing types that are in good shape and fit who work out before going to the growler in said outfits.

GenZ is nothing like GenX or even older millennials my wife is the last year of GenZ in age I get a inside view all the time.

“So breweries are going to have to offer edibles.”

A number of Texas breweries offer THC sodas tonics and seltzer with zero alcohol in them. It’s legal up to 1.5% by mass most are far less in the 5 to 20 milligrams range for a 375 ml or 8oz serving. 20 milligrams of delta 9 will rock someone who is not used to it. Plus there is not easy test for THC in the field so you would have to have the probable cause to arrest and then get a bench warrent for blood work. A much higher bar to reach vs a field blow and go for alcohol. This means your much more likely to get a DWI/DUI for alcohol vs THC.
