The Garden Thread - June, 2025
June 1, 2025 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 06/01/2025 5:48:14 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

We presently have a nest with at least 2 Cardinal chicks right outside our kitchen window. My wife watches them like a hawk (but with better intentions!)

With 2 cats and free range chickens here, those chicks better not fall out of the nest. At least the bush the nest is in is all thin branches, so, the cats can’t climb up there. But, still... :-(

I have one shishito pepper that’s as big as my pinkie! Still light green, but I’m excited. I can finally see little budding peppers in several spots now! Maybe in another few days or a week I’ll have some that will be ready to pick (and cook up!). 😍

Both cookbooks have arrived!

The casserole cookbook was a library book - no one must have checked it out ... in perfect condition except for a library sticker. I looked at a some of the recipes - fresh herbs & other tasty ingredients! I think I will like the recipes.

The Victory Garden book is fine - one dog-eared page to mark a recipe & the top edges of the pages are slightly worn, but overall, the book is in good condition.

I would highly recommend the Victory Garden book. The veggies are listed alphabetically, there are growing tips & Marion lists various ways to prepare (ex. bake, steam, saute, broil etc.) followed by quite a few recipes featuring that vegetable. The color pictures of each vegetable are very attractive. The book also has some if the less common veggies, too: celeriac, endive, fennel, Jerusalem artichokes, kohlrabi, & salsify.

Me too, they grow fast. When they stop growing, time to pick.

If it is not too disruptive, below the nest halfway to the ground put up an open inverted umbrella. Short handle. Or something similar. If someone falls out they will be caught.

Seems like something I have every year here in the moist areas, shaded or sunny and then dies back when it gets hot and dry. I’ll have to check for sure as there are look-a-likes.

Good info here on identification. https://homesteadandchill.com/chickweed-identify-harvest-dry-use/#h-chickweed-identification-and-characteristics

aaannnd .. it’s raining again. Cooled things off nicely though. It was 90 when I left work and 74 when I got to the house. Did some shopping while in town so it was one hour to home with 16 degree drop.

Mom is telling me “we need to test recipes for when we have company!” & she’s pulling out her ancient recipe collection.

Not her recipe, but I already have a Peach (Cobbler) Dump Cake ‘testing’ in the oven :-) Perfect quick dessert for company & would be a good potluck dessert.

Hi Di! Another video short tip on growing corn. I don't grow corn in my 400 sqfeet, so have not tried this.

Triim corn silks after pollination to avoid pests

Save a click. All it shows it someone cutting corn silk from the ear after pollination.

I sent this on to a trail maintainer on the AT. Not having to climb a stile with a backpack would be safer & easier. We didn’t have any stiles on our section, but I know there are some on the trail.

I am a big fan of testing recipes before company comes!

If I have a tried and true recipe, I don’t worry about it, but if I’m trying something new for guests? Yes!!

I always aim to please AND impress with my cooking! It helps them forgive me for all of the other shortcomings I have. And I have a LOT!

“At least she can cook!” ;)

Qiviut! Its a very clever idea! Provided the animals cannot figure out how to push it down and step over it might work well.

Just came in from watchingfireflies! 81F so not too bad.

There was a lot of rain in the evening yesterday and more is coming, probably to you as well. Saves on watering!

I am glad that it went smoothy without too much trouble. I hope the planting, with whatever you are setting out this year, goes well!

I have the bad habit of trying new dishes on the family at Thanksgiving. So far, I’ve only had one flop.

There are 3 tried & true main dish casseroles in my repertoire, but when you have repeat company, something new is required so that’s why I am looking for new dishes.

We had two baby moose in the yard tonight. Exceptionally cute! there has been another cow with one baby. Nice of the moose mamas to bring them by for us to see. We also have had a couple of fox kits running around. Why we live in the sticks!

Fireflies and mockingbirds are a couple of the few things I miss. Of course I am compensated by geese, cranes, fox, moose, and other delights.
