The em dash — is hotly-debated on LinkedIn as a “You’re ‘original’ article comes from Gen AI” red flag.

WHAT THE BLEEDING HELL??????????????

I was an English major in college and NEVER heard of using - for ANY kind of punctuation....NOT EVER! Okay, I'm on the older side of things, but since WHEN has - been used instead of:, ; (), etc.? And I've NEVER seen it used anywhere; but then, I do NOT use/come in contact with stupid AI crap.

Might be moot with texting altering the whole language, but I always thought the em-dash was used in conversationally-toned writing to indicate where a speaker would pause. Formal writing should probably stick to conventional punctuation.

Gen Z? Everyone’s been referring to that for ages now.

That’s BS - I use the dash all the time and I’ve never used an AI.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they embed hidden characters that don’t show on the screen, but will be there if you cut and paste.

I am not sure that is a valid sign.

Before the LLM came out I noted that "commas were passe and the hyphen were cool" in a number of news articles. That might have been where the LLM picked it up from.

The em dash (—) and the en dash (-) are two different symbols. The latter is on your keyboard; the former is not.

Using — is the red flag. Using - is normal.

We can call college student history before AI, “the era of honest learning”.

Looks like I’m busted. I’ve already been chastised once this week for the use of semicolons; these are, after all considered an affectation by someone who has nothing better to think about. Now it’s no em dashes. Soon there will be nothing left with which to separate a subordinate clause - well, I can’t think of anything - and so I’ll just have to settle for the abuse of apostrophe’s.

I'm in trouble -- I use two hyphens a lot. Like that. Because as a computer IT guy and programmer I'm constantly typing commands that use two hyphens, such as:
someprogram --version

Microsoft Word often changes two hyphens into a long dash, I'm never sure whether it's an N-dash or an M-dash, but it's no longer two hyphens anymore.

So this business about it being a ChatGPT sign is pure hell.

All Freeper posts have been written by Chat. I’ve been out by the hyphen. It’s over for me.....

I’ve always used mdashes and semicolons and the like, but will have to admit that ChatGPT is also quite fond of them.

The em dash (—) is punctuation loved by writers everywhere,

I'm still trying to figure out when to use a semicolon.

I’m a fiction writer and I’ve always used M dashes and not because Chat GPT is doing my writing. I use Chat GPT for research and review. I’m sorry to read this.

I use the N-Dash a lot - not too often I use the M-Dash - unless it’s to show a pause - and them I usually use ....

So reprogram the 'bot not to use the em-dash.

Problem solved. { snicker }
