Tattoos have become a more common sight in workplaces around the United States, even making appearances among members of the U.S. House and Senate. Amid this shift, a large majority of U.S. adults say society has become more accepting of people with tattoos in recent decades, according to a new Pew Research Center survey. And 32% of adults have a tattoo themselves, including 22% who have more than one.......
Gender: 38% of women have at least one tattoo, compared with 27% of men. This includes 56% of women ages 18 to 29 and 53% of women ages 30 to 49.
Race and ethnicity: 39% of Black Americans have a tattoo, compared with 35% of Hispanic, 32% of White and 14% of Asian Americans.
Age: Adults under 50 are especially likely to have a tattoo. Some 41% of those under 30 have at least one, as do 46% of those ages 30 to 49. This compares with a quarter of adults ages 50 to 64 and 13% of those 65 and older. Education: 37% of those with some college or less education have a tattoo, compared with 24% of those with a bachelor’s degree and 21% of those with a postgraduate degree.
Income: 43% of lower-income adults have a tattoo, compared with 31% of those in middle-income households and 21% of those in upper-income households. Religion: 41% of religiously unaffiliated adults have at least one tattoo, compared with 29% of those who are affiliated with a religion.
Sexual orientation: Around half of lesbian, gay or bisexual Americans (51%) have at least one tattoo. The share is especially high among women in this group: 68% are tattooed, including 55% who have more than one tattoo. By comparison, 31% of straight Americans have at least one tattoo.

I knew a guy who used to be really fat. He got a Woody Woodpecker tattoo on his bicep. Then he lost over 100 pounds and became a body builder. Woody ended up in his armpit. 😂
Good point....my father had a tattoo...from his days in WW2...tattoos used to mean one tough, good guy.
Years ago I was watching a comedian on TV.
He said he wanted to find a wife but kept on getting turned down, so he decided to concentrate on women that had tattoos.
He said that tattoos on a woman showed that she wasn’t afraid to do something that she would regret in 20 years.
LOL! AND THE gecko they got turns into godzilla 😆
I have tattoos. Its a couple of little dots that were put on me as a part of my cancer radiation treatment.
The #MeToo desperation of wanting to belong. Weakness and insecurities.
The ones I hate are the beefed up cops with their entire arms tatted up...It’s the intimidation factor.
90% of fat, ugly, stupid people have tattoos.
And likely that they are poor uneducated and a lgbtq female. Looks like 80% range. Easily.
Leviticus 19:28
I dot know. There is a certain realness a d beauty in our scars.
Once again, Asian Americans are the outliers.
I am about your age. The only tat I would ever get would be medically related.
I’m a 71 yo female and I got a memorial tattoo in July 2023 after my son passed away. He had a flaming heart on his chest with his daughter’s name on it, so I had the tattoo artist copy it and use his name, then put a cross on the top. I may get another one in the next few months which will also be in remembrance of him. It’s not a status symbol for me. It was to memorialize my son’s existence.
I am almost positive that there exists a religious prohibition against tattoos. It appears somewhere in the first five books of the Bible.
Tattoos have substituted for the self abusive cutting and burning of the past years.
Noticed in psychiatric world.
If you’re serious, get it where clothes can cover it. I’m 62 and had gotten one on my forearm when I was 18 and it was distracting so about 10 years ago, I had a dermatologist surgically remove it. What he told me is the problem with laser removal of tattoos is there no consistency in inks, depth and some colors don’t respond to laser.
Told my kids, the bigger the gauge, the lower the wage.
Correct answer on the trifecta.
Nature is good enough for me.
SUBSTANTIVE tattoos, useful tattoos (esp. medical, or coverup), and those signifying actual and incredible achievement, are an obvious exception to the rule.
