A South Carolina firing squad tried to shoot a convicted cop killer in the heart and missed in a “botched” execution that left him in “excruciating” pain as he bled out, according to an autopsy and experts.
Mikal Mahdi, 42 — who murdered a South Carolina police officer during a crime spree in 2004 — was shot to death by a three-person firing squad on April 11.
But an autopsy later revealed that none of the bullets hit his heart directly, and that his chest showed only two bullet wounds instead of three, according to a disturbing report by NPR.
The bullets that struck him injured his liver and other internal organs and allowed his heart to keep beating as he remained alive for roughly a minute, experts said.
“Mr. Mahdi did experience excruciating conscious pain and suffering for about 30 to 60 seconds after he was shot,” pathologist Dr. Jonathan Arden wrote in his analysis of the state autopsy.
Arden, who was hired by Mahdi’s lawyers to review the autopsy, added that Mahdi was “alive and reacting longer than was intended or expected.”
In July 2004, Mahdi went on a multi-state crime spree — committing carjacking, firearm robbery, and three murders, including that of 56-year-old off-duty police officer James Myers, who was shot at least eight times before his body was burned.

He suffered. This may have been intentional.
Sling shots, blowguns, and maybe bows and arrows.
A few hundred mcg of Fentanyl would have been quicker and let he go to Satan on a high.
...with bows and arrows.
Tired brain didn’t catch that this was a cop killer. My inappropriate post suddenly became much more inappropriate. Would delete if able. My apologies.
Where do I sign up? ;-)
From a Christian perspective: all ethical matters must be weighed not just up against the Old Testament, but both in light of the New. It’s not that the Old is negated, but it alone can’t suffice as the foundation in light of Christ.
Divorce is another example.
8 He said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. 9 And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.”
10 His disciples said to Him, “If such is the case of the man with his wife, it is better not to marry.
Don’t care.
Next time make it six rifles.
Hell, make it a dozen.
L
No perhaps you missed the point. In such firing squads are all told one rifle has a blank (so every one can ease his mind and believe he may not be firing the fatal shot ).
It is terrific to make it so everyone can have a good time. Maybe bring a grill and make burgers too, kind of tailgate party. Offer the condemned man a burger "hot off the grill" for his last meal so he can join in on the fun too. Don't forget the chips 'n' dip!
So he suffered. Kinda like his victims? Well, too f’n bad. The appropriate punishment should have been 15 minutes free time with a Louisville Slugger for each of the kin of his victims. Batter up!!
The use of a firing squad is fine but they need to overhaul the procedure from top to bottom; this really sounds like a botched procedure with incompetent people in charge.
The result will be more controversy about the use of the death penalty and possibly the loss of public support for the penalty.
How in the world could the marksmen miss at that distance? It reeks of a deliberate attempt to undermine public support of capital punishment.
Poor guy really suffered, says the mouthpiece’s mouthpiece.
That’s a tough titty said the kitty.
The autopsy showed the execution was successful......
Gee, that’s unfortunate,
So, yeah, lawyer squeezings.
Botched? He is dead ain’t he?
The shooters need more range time. One complete miss, one in the lover, and one somewhere else? How far are these guys? 20 feet or so? Or... Do they?
