Scientists may have identified a way to naturally regulate blood sugar levels and sugar cravings in a similar fashion to drugs like Ozempic.
In mice and humans, the key to unlocking this natural process was found to be a gut microbe and its metabolites – the compounds it produces during digestion.
By increasing the abundance of this one gut microbe in diabetic mice, researchers led by a team at Jiangnan University in China showed they can "orchestrate the secretion of glucagon-like peptide-1".
Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a hormone that is naturally produced by the body and which helps regulate blood sugar levels and feelings of fullness. GLP-1's release is stimulated by certain foods and gut microbes, and its mechanism of action is mimicked by drugs like semaglutide (the ingredient behind Ozempic).

It's for the children.
That’s an interesting concept.
You are literally being eaten alive without it. There are even strains of gut bacteria and probiotics that will use the mucus lining as a nutrient source without sufficient fiber. Hundreds of studies indicating plant based diets as the cornerstone of healthy aging and reduced mortality. I would seriously love more high carb foods to get a healthy makeover similar to high protein pretzels but right now fruits and veggies are the best prescriptive tool we can use.
I don’t think simply eating less and moving more really works for everyone. Some people have various issues with carbohydrates, blood sugar regulation, insulin resistance.
I think some people are fatter precisely because of WHAT they eat, not how much they eat.
Our bodies were designed to be cavemen, and depending what part of the planet you were, you were stuck with what was available. Some places had more carb-rich foods, other parts had more protein and fats. Therefore the human body could adapt to either one.
It won’t adapt without also going all in on a Stone Age exercise regimen🙈
Just walking should suffice.
Hunter gatherers consumed upwards of 4000 calories a day. We are not genetically or physiologically identical to our Paleolithics forebears in many respects and, no, you won’t look mighty and burly just walking it off.
Of course I’m not suggesting to eat 4000 calories. A sedentary person probably won’t need more than 1200-1500 calories.
It depends what you mean by the body adapting. Outside of Centenarians, half of whom live extremely unhealthy lifestyles but have the genes to compensate, sedentary life is a shorter life. The only debate is by how much.
I think fat people in Western cultures are the result of laziness and cultural issues. Calorie intake is far greater than calories burned = gaining weight. The wife and I split meals when we go out to eat. They serve you way to much just about anywhere. We’re both 70 and she weighs the same as in high school ~112lbs at 5’3” and I’m 6’1” but got up to 235 right out of high school.. bad habits. Dropped 35lbs when I joined the Navy. I hover around 200 now about 10lbs heavier than high school. We exercise, watch what we eat and not fans of deserts and never eat fast food crap and take no daily prescription drugs.
Problem is, people want an immediate fix and think drugs are the answer or the stomach staple crap. Dump the prescription medications that aren’t necessary which is probably 99% of what people take, get off their ass, exercise and eat less is the answer.
Prime example of people not fat is Vietnam where the obesity rate is about 2.1% of the population. Why:
The relatively low average body weight and obesity rates in Vietnam can be attributed to several factors:
Diet: Traditional Vietnamese cuisine is often low in calories and high in nutrients. It typically includes a variety of vegetables, lean proteins (such as fish and poultry), and rice, with less emphasis on processed foods and sugars.
Portion Sizes: Meals in Vietnam are often served in smaller portions, which can help control calorie intake.
Physical Activity: Many Vietnamese people engage in regular physical activity as part of their daily routines, whether through walking, cycling, or manual labor.
Cultural Attitudes: There may be cultural preferences for slimness, which can influence dietary choices and lifestyle habits.
Economic Factors: In some areas, limited access to high-calorie foods and economic constraints can lead to lower overall calorie consumption.
These factors combined contribute to the overall lower body weight and obesity rates in the Vietnamese population.
We all knew that, of course (😉).
Actually, as a knowledgeable person, what is your answer to how a person with tests always showing a normal range and taking one daily levothyroxine dose one hour before meals in the morning, this isn’t true:
if the body used to supply adequate thyroid secretions and now a replacement is taken, why isn’t the body back to normal? The lack was replaced.
My dental hygienist (also with low thyroid) has a theory it has to do with the exact needs of the body at exact hours of the day and night.
I still have hot flash sweating and bloating an hour after a meal but thank goodness the brain fog and other symptoms are gone.
Thanks in advance.
Ha.
That system would work if the person said “Lunch? So soon? I’m going in the back yard to do some weeding. Maybe I’ll skip supper, too.”
And not just Granny’s one from the Clampetts. We all use that one all the time.
Exactly.
“I’m sorry, but all the Ice Cream machines at McDonald are ‘broken’ once again.
All except for this one flavor, the new feature of
Arugula-Broccoli-Prune Swirl Sorbet. (Straight from Paris!)
Somehow THAT dispenser is still working just fine.
No waiting in line. Step right up!”
LOL.
I used to like frozen yogurt and noticed each and every time the various supermarkets had a big sale on it the ones always left over in the displays were “vanilla bean”. The customers including myself must have tried some once and vowed to never go back.
Just leaving Japan and still on carb overdrive, although, thank the Lord. rice consumption is trending down (meaning not EVERY meal) and protein is getting more love you definitely have to search out grains and fresh fish. They have the genes and lifestyle to withstand salt, deep fried and sugar but foreigners finding enough decent restaurant fare in sufficient quantity can be painful.😣😘
Cayenne pepper is the answer to just about everything.
I can explain why I am fat.
The Earth attracts microscopic particles and meteors regularly.
This adds to the mass of the planet.
As the mass increases, the space-time continuum is stretched further by the additional mass and gravity.
Thus, I appear larger.
