Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is under fire from fellow Democrats after appearing alongside President Donald Trump during a White House signing ceremony, sparking accusations that she was used as a political “prop.”
“Just a f—ing disaster,” said one Democratic operative, who usually supports Whitmer but spoke anonymously to NBC News.
“It feels like it removes some of the momentum she had as a politically savvy swing-state Dem.”
Whitmer was in Washington for what was supposed to be a private meeting with Trump on Wednesday. Instead, she ended up standing off to the side as the president signed executive orders calling for the investigation of two first-term administration aides who were critical of his actions.
Many of the orders were not backed by Whitmer, but her presence near the Resolute Desk gave the appearance of support, an image that didn’t go unnoticed by members of her party.
CNN senior reporter Edward-Isaac Dovere called the moment a “huge embarrassment,” while CNN host Audie Cornish said bluntly, “This does not look like the politics of resistance.”
Dovere also insinuated that the situation was set up by the Trump team, saying, “She [Governor Whitmer] went for this meeting with the president, and he used her as a prop.”
Critics said the moment undercut Whitmer’s persona as a rising Democratic leader, especially as Trump praised her on camera, calling her a “very good person” who had done “an excellent job” in Michigan.

Yeah, but at least Trump made mention of a new mission for Selfridge ANGB, which it probable needs by now. He even referred it as being “Selfridge Air Force Base”, even though it’s been an ANG base since July 1971. It’s been a military airfield along the western shore of Lake St. Clair since 1917. It’s the only base in MI with any real air power. BRAC closed a bunch of USAF bases in MI back in the ‘90’s and I think the Battle Creek ANGB flies drones now when the 110th FS had A-10’s back then.
By telling the world Whitmer is “a very good person” he is subliminally shaming her. After all, no anti-American democrat or marxist wants to be praised by a pro-American.

She was one of the worst covid tyrant governors in the nation and if she runs for POTUS her opponents better not let people forget it. I’ll never forget how she wouldn’t let people buy seeds at Home Depot. Drunk on her power and evil.
Yeah, I still fear people will have forgotten by then. I was watching the show Shameless with a lady friend of mine, and the last season takes place around early-mid 2021. It was surreal seeing the people wearing masks, distancing, and the like again.

Agree, Lockbox. Whitmer is taking some heat from the Fake News, but she's counting on Trump being successful. And that's a much smarter place to be if she wants to run for national office in the future.
Trump owns Michigan voters and union workers -- and as industrial jobs come back, Michigan can be in a good position again -- and Whitmer can claim part of that success.
So Whitmer is just being smart about her political future. And she is steadily moving away from the left wing Crocketts, AOCs, and Ms. Word Salad.
And coming the Oval Office is obviously a big win for Trump... and a tenuous step towards bipartisanship minus the whackos on the hard left.
