Volkswagen is holding cars at US ports amid tariff turmoil.
Audi, the luxury arm of the world's second largest global automaker, has confirmed it's in a high-stakes holding pattern triggered by President Donald Trump's 25 percent tariff on imported vehicles.
The affected cars arrived in the US the same day Trump announced the sweeping levies. Now, they sit idle as VW considers its next move.
Executives are thought to be hoping for either a presidential U-turn or a chance to negotiate a lower rate.
It's the latest shot across the bow from VW. The company said it will display new 'import fee.'

I presume the ones made in Chattanooga are exempt?
i dont think its cheap
as for the import fee
i think customers would say i aint paying that
I know cars aren’t shipped in containers, but the container fee, which could theoretically hold two cars, last I checked was $5600. So back of the envelope, they spent roughly three thousand getting the car here and roughly three thousand taking it back. It’s a US spec car that probably can’t be sold in Europe which means taking a more expensive US spec car to a country that doesn’t require those specs and therefore it will be overpriced as is. Plus, it would cost possibly six thousand total in shipping. Their only move is to go ahead and distribute it and see if it sells.
They’ll likely have to offer a discount probably equal to at least one shipping fee of three thousand.
Frankly, I’ve bought my last car until the ridiculous tech is gone. My next truck will have been built between about 1995 and 2005. No internet. Hard wired lights and electronics and no eclectic can bus*. *The way cars are currently wired is like your computers at work.
It'll be funnier when they bring their cars in to be serviced and have another 25% added to the already ludicrous parts charges.
I had an uncle who added the local Audi/VW dealership to his. He was astounded by the increase in service income.
Nein!
VW builds cars in the U.S. I presume its U.S. manufactured cars are unaffected by this?????
Some models might become unavailable and wait times might increase for others, but it’s not as if VW is exiting the U.S. market.
They aren’t as distinctive anymore. I don’t see as many as lately as I did in the past, but I wouldn’t know what one looks like unless I got close enough to see the logo. They sell better overseas than in the states.
In the United States, Volkswagen assembles the Passat, Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, and ID.4 at its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant.
And they rebate the 19% VAT to cars and car parts that are exported.
Lol. VWs are problematic crap now. Wouldn’t touch one of the current models.
I’ve never understood the reputation the Germans have for technology. They tend to build gold plated crap. Overly complex and lacking elegance. There is a huge gap between concept and execution. The ME262 or the Tiger tank are prime examples. Fantastic potential but in practice poorly executed unreliable crap. I say this as someone who owned and loved 3 old Beetles.
Holding your vehicles because you don’t want to pay the tariff, is now considered a shot across the bow?
My buddy’s got one like that. I don’t think it’s a Jetta but it’s a VW something.
I noticed it on his 3 acre property one day and mentioned it had really sporty body lines.....he said of all the VWs he owns (and he owns at least 40) that one is the biggest piece of crap he has. Just like yours, something was always breaking. Everything he mentioned could be related to poor engineering.
Every time I go over there it’s still in the exact same place. Lol!
I bought my wife a German import in 2015 but it’s not a VW.....10 years later and it hasn’t missed a lick....knock on wood. 😏
Yup, just like every other German car and most everything built these days. That’s coming from a VW owner.
Now that’s funny.
My last car was a Jetta GLI. When I bought it used the thing sold for half of what it did when new, with only 14,000 miles.
“What a deal!” I thought.
I got so sick of finding somewhere to get it repaired I sold it.
Now I have a Mazda and am so relieved to be out of that VW.
I think he has one of every Rabbit there is, even a Rabbit truck....and at least 3 Sciroccos.
“Right...how long will VW hold their inventory at US ports? Not long, methinks.”
Charge them $20k per day per vehicle to store them.
weren’t the original VW Rabbits notorious for valve guide failures?
Tesla’s open.
