I don't recommend the Bosch 500 series. It's dumb.
Sadly, it seems all appliance manufacturers are going this route. Where will we be in 5-10 years next time I need to buy a new dishwasher? Probably even worse off.

When I was a teen fresh out of high school, I had a roommate from Luxembourg in flight school. He taught me to rinse out my socks, underwear, and shirt, in the bathroom sink when getting ready for bed. Hang them on the shower rod or similar, and you’re good to go at 7:30 AM. The guy traveled the world for years out of a tiny backpack. He was also wealthy as the Pope. I figured out that frugality sustains the wealthy. Always take a pass on consumerism impulse purchases.
I found out my commode makes a long distance call when I pee. I wonder what that’s about? |
So, YOU'RE the one who keeps calling me with tee tee sounds.
Cut it out, willya?
2002. A tad before the smart phone camera days. I was still using a Nokia Brick phone. (Which by the way, I still use my Nokia Flip Phone today. In a hostile world of heave machinery maintenance, it is my lifeline.)
My apartment building managers upgraded the old Speed Queen washer and dryer to new ones. The new washing machine has been nothing but trouble. It has crapped out like 3 times in the last 6 months and they had to put the old one back in while the new one was repaired.
I worked a summer on the refrigerator line ar Whirlpool in 1978.
They were well made then.
I made sure of it! 😀
I put a plug in and two grommets before it went into the insulation machine.
It is an eye-opener to meet people like that.
I have a cousin who has sailed the oceans in a catamaran, even to Antarctica, with essential oils as his go-to in many respects. Has amazing woodworking skills.
Don’t know about his wealth or lack thereof, but I know he straddled my chest and tried to smother me for fun in my youth.
Good to know. Your post is a keeper. Thanks.
There’s a market! Simple, low cost, user-serviceable automobiles, like the days of old. My MG’s owner’s manual included directions for adjusting the valves, tuning the carbs, and setting the timing and dwell angles. Did all these things every 6,000 miles or so. Oil changes and spark plugs were simple and cheap. Today’s manuals warn owners against drinking the coolant. Something went way, way wrong a long, long time ago... (I do, however, like my back-up camera on my newer vehicles!)
One thing I learned 30 years ago is that when you buy appliances from a big box store you will get dumbed down appliances.
I found this out when I bought a Maytag washer from Montgomery Wards. While it was still under warranty it quit draining so I called Maytag to have it repaired. They found out I bought the washer from Wards and they told me to call Wards.
And of course Wards didn’t want to honor the warranty either.
And cheapening of name brand appliances still goes on today at Big Box retailers like Best Buy, Home Depot and Lowe’s.
When my Home Depot cheapo water heater crapped out after 8 years, I had a plumber get a good one from a wholesaler who does not carry the cheap stuff.
Thanks, probably needing a new washer and dryer in the not to distant future. Needing kitchen appliances also sometime (30 years old when GE was good)
Ditto. 26 years here. Every time onw breaks they give me a smaller one. The dishwasher is ok but I don’t like the racks.
Stove got less features than the first one.
Fridge ice maker broke. Got a fridge and it also broke. Bought some ice trays and then a counter top ice maker. Freezer was smaller so we bought a 3.5 cubic foot freezer. Big enough for us and we now buy in more bulk.
I haven’t purchased a dishwasher since 2008. That was a Maytag and every one I bought before that was Maytag too.
I own one. Worst dishwasher I’ve ever owned. My first year owning it will be up soon - and I’m already sick of calling the arrogant ‘repair’ people. They all act like French waiters - putting up their noses if you order the wrong ‘starter’.
I had an electrician move the outlet so it would be easier to reach to ‘reset’ ...(one idiot said if you left it unplugged for 8 minutes the program would clear) and that doesn’t even work half the time. One repairman downloaded ‘new’ software then said to ‘stay with the same cycle’ and not to open the door to add anything if the machine was running. I got told the crap about running the dishwasher from my cellphone. I asked the guy why would I want to do that? He didn’t have an answer. Now I know - it might work if you do that... All I can say is don’t buy this machine
I got a scooter at an auction (actually it’s a motorcycle or “maxi-scooter”).
Anyway while looking for parts I found out they are now putting tech gadgets on SCOOTERS.
Like remote key fobs, sound system connected to bluetooths etc. my scooter has rear wheel ABS.
People buy this stuff as it’s nice new but just wait a decade when it starts to break and they got to fix all this tech. Basically this trend is going to make vehicles unrepairable…throwaway.
Now that I think about it, I think the one I was describing was a Maytag.
I will NOT buy any Whirlpool brand going forward, which is a long story involving 4 appliances of various of their brands - Jenn-Air, KitchenAid, Whirlpool.
I am hopeful some of the problems due to Greenie extremist Federal overregulation will get better in the next 3-4 years.
Should be an option to keep it simple.
yup my newer not top of the line LG fridge wanted to be connected online so I could monitor the temp when away (and order filters when ever it felt like and track our door opening habits because apparently that is worth something?)
I just said “uhh no” but if I had to have it connected to the interenet to get it to dispense ice/water or open the door.
it’d go right back where it came from.
If they start REQUIRING you to do stuff like this, a cottage industry will spring up of people who can make it work WITHOUT having to connect to the cloud. If ya get my meaning.
Don’t forget to hand wash the dishes before you put them in the automatic dishwasher.
There is, however, “one neat trick”.
Tablespoon or so of TSP added to the inefficient commercial stuff.
