I won't connect my dishwasher to your stupid cloud

I don't recommend the Bosch 500 series. It's dumb.

Sadly, it seems all appliance manufacturers are going this route. Where will we be in 5-10 years next time I need to buy a new dishwasher? Probably even worse off.

There may be a future consumer backlash for ‘dumb’ appliances.

Our washer and dryer are over 25 years old. A switch on the washer quit working and so I had a local appliance repair man fix it. Before he left he told me to keep they as long as posible because the new ones are designed to fail in just a couple of years.

I bought a dishwasher probably 15 years or so ago. Intentionally bought the simplest one I could find, with the most electromechanical controls, the fewest computer controls possible at the time. It was still going strong when I sold that house 2 years ago.

#2: "There may be a future consumer backlash for ‘dumb’ appliances."

Yep. It makes washing dishes by hand not seem like such a bad chore after all.

I myself could even be categorized as a "dumb" dishwasher. But at least
I'm organic and powered by renewable energy.

I recently bought a front loading washer/dryer combo (not same brand).

Discovered real quick that you have to connect it to the cloud to get an alert that the dryer shut off.

What dumbass signs off on eliminating the end of cycle buzzer? Needless to state - perhaps - that it’s not connected, so I have to set a freaking timer on my phone.

Seriously thinking about going to an upcoming convention for appliance manufacturers.

Just for research, of course.

Bosch will be able to track exactly when you did a load, what settings, how much water was used, and anything else they were monitoring

A friend had a broken water valve in his basement, which leaked a steady stream of water. He and his wife were out of town for a week, so it ran for a while (luckily it \ sump-pump was nearby which kept it from filling the basement).

Because the local water utility installed a smart meter, they could tell him exactly when the leak started, graph it to its maximum flow, and exactly how much water was leaked.

I had one of those.

I had to sell it because it kept getting invited into group chats discussing military strikes.

A few months ago, we were shopping for new clothes washer & dryer. The insanity of some of the higher end, tech central machines was hilarious. One of them looked eerily similar to the 2001 Hal.*

We finally found your basic GE washer & dryer. They work like most others we have used for.....oh..... I don’t know, 50 years. No bells, no whistles, just “get r done!”. What a concept!

I’ve repaired a few and the parts store people say the same thing... “Keep it”.

Plus they are actually pretty easy to work on.

We went back to an older Maytag after our new washer broke. It wasn’t getting the clothes clean. Hence the whole “scent beads” to cover up the residual odors.

Our repairman will only work on older appliances.

I don’t own a dishwasher. The DW cubby is for the trash cans.

The kitchen window over the sink is large and starts at the countertop height.

I have a great view to the beyond. All kinds of wildlife out there for the show.

Had to replace the washer a little over a year ago. Got the “simplest” one but of course it all depends on the electronics inside anyway.

At least it doesn’t yell at a cloud.

I like our 15 yo front loader. We call it R2D2 from the sounds it makes. Just fixed our 20+ yo Kenmore dryer. Easy to do.

Our other place just has a wash tub and a clothesline. It’s our “hillbilly house”.

I don’t get out much. Washers and dryers and dishwashers are connected to the cloud? Why? What is the benefit of that?

When they came to set up our Sleep Number bed, the delivery guy asked for our wifi password. HUH? I don’t think so.

When we moved into our house in 2023, the prior owners had left a washer-dryer set, not even a year old. The washer wanted our wifi password for a few reasons, one of which would let me know when the cycle finished. A loud “beep!” has worked just fine for me.

We GAVE the set to the handyman who helped us after the move, and installed our old set.
