A friend had a broken water valve in his basement, which leaked a steady stream of water. He and his wife were out of town for a week, so it ran for a while (luckily it \ sump-pump was nearby which kept it from filling the basement).
Because the local water utility installed a smart meter, they could tell him exactly when the leak started, graph it to its maximum flow, and exactly how much water was leaked.
I wonder if you will be required to buy a subscription or purchase their updates to keep the appliance running like John Deere does now.
