Every time I boot up my Windows 11, I'm greeted by MS Edge. I can't seem to shut it down for good. I searched the internet, followed all the advice, but it doesn't work.
I tried the following tips I found on the internet:
1. Press Windows + R to launch the Run application. Type “regedit” in the dialogue box and press Enter.
2. Once in the registry editor, navigate to the following file path: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NlaSvc\Parameters\Internet
3. Now, look at the right side of the screen where different keys are listed. Search through them until you find “EnableActiveProbing”. Double-click it to open its properties.
4. Set the currently set value to zero “0”. Press Ok to save changes and exit.
Okay, I did that. Edge still pops up.
I tried this:
Go to the following path: C:WindowsSystemApps. Find the folder named “Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe”.
Right-click the folder and select “Rename.” Change the folder’s name to something like “Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe_disabled.”
Renaming the folder tricks Windows into thinking Edge is gone. But remember, this won’t fully uninstall it, just disable it.
Okay, I did that. Edge still pops up.
I found that running CCleaner apparently shuts down Edge, because CC shuts down all web browsers when cleaning. But if I shut the laptop lid for a while, then open it ten or so minutes later, Edge greets me again.
And as I always rudely interject on any VM-related thread... VMware Workstation Pro is now free to use (non-commercial). I continue to be impressed how refined and polished it is ... Its “repair” and “reinstall tools” features are terrific. Self-repaired itself after somehow all its drivers got zapped out of my /dev the other day and the VM (of course) wouldn’t start (this might have been the result of btrfs restoring one of those snapshots, now that I think of it). 30 seconds later was ready to boot the Windows 10 VM. Can also insert new tool versions INTO the VM at start-up.
Use ‘df -T’ on the command line to quickly see which file system(s) are used for the various disk partitions. Probably will show the .snapshots pseudo-partition also.
And a snapper command to restrict snapshots to 3 for the root volume would look something like this:
‘sudo snapper -c root set-config NUMBER_LIMIT=3’
Thank you for reminding me of the workstation- I will. Havs to get that one. Virtual box is OK. But can be a pain sometimes.
That site is a good one to bookmark fur sure. I’ve been trying a few out- juxt to get a f,eel before I commit to installing them Ina vm.
Ok thanks- I’ll probably just leave it then. I was using windows 10 and 11 only just rarely, but got kinda sick of having to reboot from Linux into windows environment to use windows stuff- so I have recently been opening windows 10 and running Linux in a vm to access the internet with- much safer than using windows to do so I think. I still haven’t tried lutris yet though, but will- but I like running programs in windows as opposed to in an emulated windows Ina vm, so I’m exp,owing the windows host and Linux guest for the best of both worlds without having to reboot from one os to the other
I have a hard time trusting or believing people that don’t hate Microsoft products. Glad we are the intelligent ones here.
Just delete it like any other file by sending it to the trash.

Yeah, that happens to me at times, and you're right, certain Microsoft processes and application specifically call for Edge, not the default browser of the user's preference. I'm not sure whether that's because they want to ensure that the content is displayed "their way", or they're just doing their usual a$$hole act. I'm not sure I care, since I can't do anything about it except avoid Microsoft applications. I'm stuck with Outlook for work stuff, but I try to use LibreOffice for other tasks.
The OP was complaining about Edge launching on bootup, which sure sounds like the Startup list. My Win11 launches Teams on bootup, but I left it that way because it's my work machine and I actually need Teams up first anyway.
CCleaner shuts down Edge when I first open the computer.
But if I run CCleaner later ... sometimes it doesn't shut down Edge again, but sometimes it does. Which means that Edge had resurrected itself, running in the background without letting me know.

What do you mean “you are greeted by Edge?” The Edge browser just starts up when you boot the machine? Edge doesn’t automatically open in any version of Windows. Never has. That tells me you have something in your Autoruns that is opening Edge.
Go to Regedit and open HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
What is listed in there? I’d bet there’s some unrelated piece of software that’s set to start on boot. Alternatively, Edge may be listed in there, but that’s never been done in any version of Microsoft, at least not by Microsoft.
Get a Mac.
Take control of the edge folder from trusted installer and delete it and all sub folders. It’ll reinstalled at every upgrade but you can delete it each time.
I haven’t found anything that will completely remove it or stop reinstallation.
Linux won’t bother you that way. Microsoft publishes and forces you to use malware. Linux can be installed to your hard drive but it operates very well (and anonymously) from an external drive.
Yeah I was doing transcription and the companies FORCE you to use “internet explorer” and now I imagine one has to use “edge.” If you try to delete them - like just flat-out delete the whole thing so you can use another browser, it harms the computer.
Isn’t that weird? It’s like the people who developed and promoted “microsoft” are just, like, trying to destroy everyone’s capability to use a computer and make life miserable and complicated for everyone who wants to (or has to) use a computer.
But that couldn’t be true, could it?
I never have Edge start by its own...... I must start it. BTW Edge demands the least memory.... then comes Brave... with Chrome hogging the most mem
