The muscle car they tried to erase. The 1968 AMC Javelin AMX.
Yes that was a good year before they went goofy with the front finders.
You never saw the Gremlin?
Or the vw beetle?
In the early ‘80’s, one of our high school friends met up with us in town. He was out on a date in his new (used) Javelin, and the thing started smoking in the passenger compartment. It had a weird under-dash heater on the passenger side, and it had set the carpet on fire. We turned off the heater and cut out the coal red glowing carpet section with our pocket knives.
I never wanted an AMC after that.
Had an ex-brother-in-law that bought a 340 six-pack Challenger after his Army stint in Vietnam as a Huey door gunner. He worked out some demons in that car until he high centered it on a divider. No telephone poles involved.
It’s strange— the car is so ungainly and dorky looking that it has a certain —and very unique— appeal. I drive a Corvette for fun, but bet that I’d have some fun in a Pacer, too :)
I lusted after that car back in HS.
Or the Gremlin. I still remember the commercial with the grizzled pump jockey saying, “Hey, lady, where’s the rest of your car?” Very funny, self-deprecating humor by AMC.
The Matador was a Pacer with a trunk. Ugly as they get.
Let me guess, your favorite looking car was a ‘37 Chevy. Now there was an ugly piece of crap.
“I believe Mark Donahue raced one of these in Trans-Am for Roger Penske.”
You are correct.
“A souped up pinto”
Umm Ok,
“Mark Donohue (later an F1 Driver) is most notably known for winning races in AMC Javelins, particularly in the Trans-Am racing series, where he achieved significant success driving a Javelin, securing multiple victories and helping AMC win the manufacturer’s championship in 1971
1967 was the best looking GTO for sure. I have a black hardtop that I’ve owned since 1990. I bought it when they were affordable.
I thought they were ugly until AMC made the 74 Matador.
Redefined the word!
Why would you make baseless assumptions, that is just juvenile.
I don’t question that. It just looks like one to me. :)
