Bring back ties. If you don’t win in regulation, you don’t deserve full credit for winning in overtime.
What’s wrong with the college football OT rules?
Much better than the NFL OT rules.
“The chain crew will still be there as backup”
LOL...yeah, that chain crew will still be there just to make people think it is the “old football.”
If they keep overtime, I suggest going to a points system.
3 points for winning in regulation
2 points for winning in overtime
1 point for losing in overtime
0 points for losing in regulation
“He added there wasn’t much conversation around a fourth-and-long option to keep possession, though those discussions could occur next month.”
Possibility: Option to keep possession if they make a 20+ yard play from a designated yard line instead of kicking off after score.
I always thought the overtime rule as is, is ok.
Because assuming the first team that gets the ball deep in their territory, if they fail to get a first down then has to kick the ball away, most likely the other team only has to be maybe 20-30 yards to kick the winning FG, whereas the team that got the ball first has to score a touchdown to win. So it seems like a fair tradeoff.
How about rethinking all the flags? It's unwatchable.
So the NFL screwed up the overtime period, now proposes to fix it.
Here’s an idea. 15 minute MAX overtime. Both teams have a shot at the ball regardless if the receiving team scores a touchdown on their first possession.
Example: Team A receives and scores a touchdown. Kickoff to Team B who scores a touchdown. Kickoff to Team A who is forced to punt, Team B kicks a field goal, game over. Each team had 2 possessions so they’re even.
Onside kick rules: Throw these stupid rules out and go back to the old way of doing things. As it is, they want the old percentages back without going back to the old rules.
Optimal? Maybe they mean optical.
Two hr nap time to help older viewers?
The best alternative to overtime is “criteria”.
The game is never tied. The team with criteria is always winning.
Criteria:
Highest score - If you have the highest score, you are winning
Most TDs - If it is tied 17-17 but one team has 2 TDs, 2 XPs and a FG and the other has 1 TD, 1- 2PConv, 3 FGs, the one with 2 TDs is winning
Last to score - If it is 17-17, the last one to score is winning.
Before you knock it....You should watch a competition that uses it. International wrestling uses it. It creates a constant sense of urgency. One team (or wrestler) is always doing everything they can to get the criteria. You never see wrestlers waiting out the clock so that they can get to OT.
It’s a way better system.
I think the opening kickoff and the third quarter kickoff should be a RUBGY SCRUM with the five offensive lineman.
Free throws. Maybe penalty shots.
Quit screwing around with what used to be an exciting game
I suggest using the position of the ball at the end of the game to determine which team gets the ball in the over time. Which ever team’s goal the ball is closest to would receive in overtime. The coin toss would only be used if the ball is on the 50 yard line at the end of the game.
Past time. The college overtime rules are both fair and fun.
Just play a full quarter like it’s another 4th quarter (complete with 2 minute warning). If still tied, just leave it a tie. It’s not difficult, but these leagues insist on implementing Mickey Mouse rules.
There were 16 overtime games in 2024. That means 9 times the receiving team won, and 7 times the other team won. In such a small sample, that is parity.
