A woman from New Jersey was killed by a hippo while on an African safari with her husband who now alleges the tour operator failed to keeping her safe.
Lisa Manders, 70, was gruesomely attacked by the hippo last year in Zambia on the trip while her husband, Craig, horrified husband watched on.
The mother-of-three suffered 'catastrophic injuries' and died moments after the attack, according to the lawsuit.
'Had we understood the dangers posed by the hippopotamus, we never would have agreed to be in such close contact while on foot,' Craig said in a statement from his attorneys, Paul Slager and Nicole Coates, reported NBC News.

Safari… with no rifles.
If Leticia James and Whoopi Goldberg have taught us anything, it’s that hippos are nasty, foul-tempered creatures. Steer clear.
Those are dangerous events. My high school shop teacher was stomped to death by an elephant while on a photo safari.
I remember the show by Marlin Perkins and one of the clips they opened the show with was his young, ripped assistant getting chased by a rhino.
He FLEW to the nearest tree, running literally for his life and occasionally looking behind him to see how close it was, and about levitated into its branches.
Fortunately he made it and the rhino gave up, but what a close call.
I’ve seen several videos of charging hippos & they look terrifying and are really fast. No thanks.
My wife and I came back from a hike around Kintla Lake in NorthWest Glacier to find a moose in camp on the opposite side of our car. That moose wanted to get at us, but we kept the car between him and us. After about 5 minutes of that footsie we had an opportunity to rush the car doors and get in.
Moose are very dangerous.
When you live in a densely packed urban area, and your only exposure to African wildlife is watching Disney's The Lion King 47 times with the grandkids...
Trying to follow your sage advice regarding bear as well as I can...
“I was charged by rhinos in Nepal. They are notoriously blind, and missed.”
Been there and never saw any Rhinos.
Hippos are vegetarians! They can’t be dangerous.
Worse. We were young (21), stupid, and with a guide. So when we spotted the rhinos in the tall grass from the top if our elephants, the guide and us college kids decided it would be a “good idea” to get off the elephants and stalk the rhinos for a better look!
Ladyrustic, well said.
At first I thought this happened in Memphis, Atlanta, or Chicago. Or a McDonalds
Lot of people in this world whose only skill is writing a check to get whatever they want.
Hippos kill more people in Africa every year than any other animal... I don’t know why anyone would ever want or try to get up close in any way with one.
Interesting.
We get bear at our house but not grizzlies...
Biggest bears I’ve ever seen were Alaskan brown bears. Came within about 12” of being plucked out of my perch by two of ‘em once. 11:30 PM and the sun was just setting...
Nepal has a jungle called the “Terai”, and there is a well worn tourist trade to try to spot the indigenous rhinos and occasional tiger.
While staying in mud huts nearby, we were awakened by a hugh and series hullabaloo one morning. Ran outside the hut to see a rhino charging through the village with a dozen 10 year old boys chasing it and hitting it in the rump with sticks. Being essentially blind, the rhino never saw the ditch, ran headlong into it, and the ground shook when his chest hit the far side at speed.
One night in the Terai in Nepal, we stayed up in the Machan, a treehouse overlooking a watering hole. Lots of animals at dusk.
In the early morning mists we descended to walk back to the village, past two huge rhinos at about 20 feet with steam coming out of their nostrils. They never moved as we crept by as quietly as we could
Whoa!
Griz freak me out.
