Students aren’t recovering from covid. Test scores are getting worse.

Anxiously anticipated federal data on student achievement show that children continued to lose ground in the years after the pandemic, particularly in reading, a troubling finding that has fed competing political narratives about education in America.

The sobering report released Wednesday from the National Assessment of Educational Progress, sometimes called the Nation’s Report Card, showed that the path to recovery remains far rockier than experts had hoped — especially for students who were already struggling the most.

The data showed that reading scores, which had fallen dramatically from 2019 to 2022, fell again in 2024, with a record portion of eight-graders scoring in the lowest category for proficiency. Math scores rose a bit for fourth-graders — a bright spot — but were flat in eighth grade compared to 2022.

A few causes: anarchy in the classroom; parents not doing their job; social promotion; dumbed-down curricula; and DEI displacing merit.

I think calling it bad parenting is too simplistic. When my children were in school during the 80’sand 90’s their reading list consisted of classics. Today’s children are allowed to read comic books for their summer reading. Many of the books they read in class are about social reengineering. It’s a different world and it needs to change.
The sad thing is parents are actually more involved in their children’s education today. My daughter is constantly getting text messages about her children’s grades and homework assignments. Teachers are making the parents responsible for their children’s schoolwork instead of making students take personal responsibility. It’s a total mess.

I think parents have to consider supplementing the education they get from school, because more and more they teach to the lowest common denominator.

One other cause for my list: teachers not knowing the subjects that ther are supposed to be teaching.

My son pulled his child out of public school and put her in private school because the public school was getting so bad, KISD. Many parents would say they couldn’t afford to do that but unfortunately their priorities are misplaced. Got to have the biggest house, biggest tv, and most expensive furnishings, and don’t forget the most expensive cars. I could go on but I’m sure you get the picture. We only have our children for a short period of time before they are out on their own.

Reading scores declining.

I wonder why?

In this internet-driven gamer world, I wonder WHY kids reading scores are dropping...

Hmm...such a quandary as to what might be the root of these tiktokkers not READING better than they might.

did they test the kids for their knowledge of pronouns, white privilege, and gay sex positions? American public school kids lead the world in knowledge of these subjects.

It’s the entire failure of the entire educational system that focuses more on DEI and brainwashing kids than educating them.

The educationalist establishment doesn’t agree, they blame the parents.

Teachers don’t teach anymore. Everything is done on the student’s computer. They read the lesson on their computer, they take the test on their computer, and then the test is corrected by the computer. They student’s never get a paper back to see what they got wrong. How can you learn if you don’t know which responses were wrong?

Covid has nothing to do with students’ apathy in their preparation or with their parents’ negligence.

DEI and covid came at the same time.

It’s the DEI, not the bug.

1) Phonics for reading.
2) Memorize multiplication and addition tables. No recess until the student can do 100 sums in two minutes with 98% accuracy. Same for multiplication.
3) No DEI education until the student can reliably compute Taylor series for trigonometric functions!

Number 3 won’t prevent DEI, just delay it until college or later.

It’s not just Covid. It’s the entire failure of the entire educational system that focuses more on DEI and brainwashing kids than educating them.

Exactly. Covid is just an excuse.

They were taught by the commie trash to behave like idiots. Why expect that to reverse? Addicts don’t improve. Killers are not rehabilitated.

Rotten apples do not ......... “heal”.
