Wisconsin Democrats introduce immigration bill to protect people in sensitive spaces

MADISON, Wis. -- At the Wisconsin State Capitol Tuesday morning, representatives and local leaders introduced a bill that aims to protect immigrants who go to places like churches, schools, or hospitals from being detained solely based on their immigration status.

One week prior, President Trump signed an executive order that would allow law enforcement to enter sensitive areas to detain immigrants.

“The idea of federal agents entering a space where people are worshiping, it’s absolutely frightening to me,” said Reverend Dr. Jonathan Grieser of Grace Episcopal Church.

Rev. Grieser is trying to prepare the community for the future but feels uncertain about how new federal immigration policies will be carried out locally.

“These decisions seem to be taken without consideration for the implications for the larger community, for our most vulnerable people in our society,” said Rev. Grieser.

Rev. Grieser was one of many church leaders that stood beside Democrats at the State Capitol Tuesday morning. There, they introduced the bill that would protect immigrants who go to places like churches, schools, or hospitals from being detained solely based on their immigration status.

Under the proposed bill, law enforcement at the state and federal level would need a judicial warrant to get access to such places to detain an individual.

“It simply enforces that officials follow the proper procedures of securing a judicial warrant before attempting to enter any of these sacred and sensitive places,” said President of Forward Latino, Darrlyn Morin.

Democrats say the bill applies to all civilians and their constitutional right to protect against unlawful searches unless there’s a judicial warrant.

“Chaos is not a safety solution. Hate is not a policy, and fear is not safety,” said Representative of the 76th District Francesca Hong.

“Kids deserve to feel safe in school. People deserve to seek medical care without fear of separation or detainment," said Representative of Wisconsin 8th District in Milwaukee Sylvia Ortiz-Vele.

If churches aren’t considered safe, Rev. Grieser worries about vulnerable people in the community.

"What we see already, I think, is that people who are fearful and worried about their situation are probably going to be less likely to reach out for help," said Rev. Gieser.

Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos told News 3 Now last week that Republicans would be writing legislation that would force law enforcement to cooperate with federal immigration officials.

If Republican legislation like this is put forward, Governor Evers is almost certain to veto it.

“federal law allows ICE to go anywhere anytime to nab illegal aliens.”

If the criminal invader is in a place not open to the general public, a judicial warrant (or permission of the place possessor) is required.

The police get judicial warrants frequently - it’s part of the job.

If I recall, when Texas and Arizona passed laws to protect their citizens from the illegal invasion, states like Illinois objected and got a Supreme Court ruling that immigration enforcement was a strictly Federal matter.

Well.

Since immigration is a strictly Federal matter, I presume all sanctuary laws, policies, and procedures are pre-empted by the Supremacy clause, and that Illinois is welcome to FAFO if their officials want to be prosecuted for insurrection. There are some vacant cells in the DC jail right now...

Wisconsin state representatives aiding and abetting criminals must be democrats.

If a criminal invader kills someone with Democratic complicity, there will be political and criminal justice system hell to pay.

And it’s not going to be a long time before some Democrats are going to deeply regret their pandering stupidity.

The federal government can make the possession of cash by an alien a crime.

The federal government can effectively require all non-cash transactions involving entities and people of means be tracked.

Invaders don’t have to be allowed to drive motor vehicles on post roads.

Waiting for a bus in Minnesota in winter can be unpleasant.

States can be required to provide W-2s to the IRS, and any other information necessary for federal functioning.

States can be required to withhold income tax, and withhold and forward criminal invaders.

Nope.

No sanctuary spaces.

So these “legislators” want to put innocent people in harms way in churchs, schools, and hospitals by basically TELLING the illegal invaders where to hide out to avoid what’s coming to them?

How asinine of you to misquote me. I specifically commented "Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe that federal law allows ICE to go anywhere anytime to nab illegal aliens." Thank you for the clarification you have provided but you purposefully omitted the part where I asked if anyone knew otherwise which is disingenuous at best.

You can do better.

Democrats will protect their voters no matter how dangerous their crimes are or what threats they pose to the community.

Power and control are all that matters to them.

Should go to jail for aiding and supporting an invasion of the United States.

While I like the idea of anytime raids, it would probably be better to conduct the raids during normal business hours. First, you can probably avoid paying overtime, and I would think that “regular hours” confrontations are less likely to escalate. After all, the goal is to get the illegals out, avoid violence as possible, and focus on the goals.

Blatantly unconstitutional. If you commit a “good” crime like entering the US illegally, you are protected. It’s illegal for the illegal alien probably worse for those protecting them.

detained solely based on their immigration status.

ICE is going after the worst first, illegals who have committed horrible crimes, but if other illegals are caught at the same time, they may be deported as well.

Like the terrorists park their weapons in schools and hide their US targets among churches and families and pharmacies.

The bad parents have been in charge. Terrible teacher who lets her students run wild.

Suddenly someone is enforcing rules and norms and the students protest and have been getting their way.

Shock and anger and fear and excitement that Trump is serious. Americans are determined.

Even some in favor of all that Trump is doing are anxious. They are accustomed to predictability. It's a whole new world.

That’s cute. A state trying to obstruct the feds on immigration policy. I seem to recall when Texas wanted to build the wall the feds sued, as immigration is a FEDERAL thing.

What the heck is with these Episcopalians? Just when you think they can’t get worse. Did he just let the cat outta the bag and this is exactly what they’re planning? Sure, gather up the kindergarten Sunday school class to shield illegals. They will, ya know.
