Intermittent fasting has gained attention for its potential metabolic benefits, but questions remain about which regimen is most effective and how it compares to continuous energy restriction. To address these questions, researchers analyzed data from over 9,800 participants across 153 studies, focusing on three common intermittent fasting regimens: time-restricted eating, alternate-day fasting, and the 5:2 diet. These were compared with continuous energy restriction and usual diets.
The analysis examined four key metabolic domains (anthropometry, blood pressure, glycemic parameters, and lipid profile) across 14 specific outcomes. By employing network meta-analysis, the researchers were able to combine direct and indirect evidence, allowing them to rank the effectiveness of each dietary strategy based on their impacts on metabolic health.
The findings highlighted that all intermittent fasting regimens significantly reduced body weight compared to usual diets. The network meta-analysis revealed that intermittent fasting was more effective than usual diets in 85.4% of the studied metabolic outcomes and outperformed continuous energy restriction in 56.1%. Among the intermittent fasting regimens, alternate-day fasting consistently emerged as the most effective strategy for improving metabolic health, ranking first in 64.3% of the comparisons and second in 14.3%.
This research supports intermittent fasting as an effective dietary approach for improving metabolic health, outperforming usual diets and demonstrating efficacy comparable to continuous energy restriction. Among the various intermittent fasting regimens, alternate-day fasting stands out as the most promising, consistently delivering the most substantial improvements based on current evidence.

The best dieting method ever invented... Stop stuffing your face every time you walk by a buffet. Seriously... It’s called eating too much... That is why you are fat. It has nothing to do with your hormones or your genes. You’re eating too much food.
BS. You don’t know my history.
And I never claimed what you’re falsely accusing me of.
Sounds like you’re projecting.
.
“Respectfully, people like you are ...”
What came after that was anything but respectful
“And weight problems don’t miraculously go away with healthy meals.”
As a matter of fact they do! LOL.
“There are many hormonal conditions that cause weight gain and prevent weight loss. PCOS, hypothyroidism, etc.”
If that’s what was under discussion you might have a point. There are indeed metabolic disorders that affect pre-adolescents. The huge majority of Americans that are overweight, obese, or morbidly obese do not suffer from bizarre glandular issues or rate metabolic disorders. They are fat because they eat too much food.
It does nobody any good to make excuses or pretend that somehow eating 3000 or 4000 calories a day and sleeping it off is something that can’t be addressed by putting the fork down. This is yet another area where the “experts” aren’t helping too much. There is a lot of BS out there these days, IF works for a lot of people because they don’t have to subscribe to someone trying to sell them something, etc.
I started doing time restricted eating almost four years ago and have stuck with it. Lost about 25 pounds in the first three months and have easily kept it off. Started when I was 69 years old and the biggest surprise was the vast improvement with arthritis in my hands. Before I would occasionally have days when I could barely hold a pen; that hasn’t happened in years.
My mother, bless her soul, ate meat only during one meal on Sunday at dinner. And she fasted one day every month drinking only water. She never had any chronic or serious diseases and died of old age in sleep at age 103. I can’t remember her ever getting colds or coughs. While I was a magnet for flu bugs until reaching my 20’s.
You could get their newest kit for as little as $160 with shipping and a set of extras with a bottle.
Get it with a subscription and buying two will get you over the $200 mark for free shipping, it appears.
There are a bit of carbs in the soup mixes you get, and that, coupled with the glycerin drink help with your muscles, but you are in ketosis most of the time, otherwise.
I trust his kit, but you could do something of your own that wouldn't have the same benefits, but would get you most.
Yes, mobility issues for sure. I had some back problems, and a pretty bad case of numbness/burning in thigh muscle. What’s that called again? Stenosis or Sciatica. It’s bad. I’m not working 12 hours a day any longer so it has gone away.
One thing I still can’t get over. 75 pounds is a lot of extra cargo to carry around. I’ve a portable generator used for camping. Weighs 52 pounds with a gallon of fuel. When I pick it up and carry it around, it feels like it weighs a ton!! How did I carry 75 around!? It’s insane. In fact that’s what started me on the journey. I wanted to take a backoacking trip, I knew there was no way ai could carry a backpack up and down mountain trails being overweight. Was already to go in a few months - and then saw the specter of the WuHan Flu rising across the globe.
By that time, I canceled back country permits and figured the states were going to shut down. Then one day, I felt feverish, and sore and weak. I thought my thermometer was defective. 104.5°F! Felt like I was ran over by a truck, so I knew what happened. Always wonder what the outcome would have been had I still been Obese with Covid.
Only in America would anyone suggest we need to spend money to lose weight. Nice work if you can get it, I suppose.
Glad you didn’t have to find out...obesity was a big risk factor.
What are the times you don’t eat? I have a relative that doesn’t eat after 7pm and not again until 9am the next day. That seems quite doable.
Despite the incessant excuses found here
Weight is math
Calories in versus out
With slight metabolism variances per individual
And I’ve had graves since 1987 and empty sella since 93
So save it for the stupids
Therefore if you fast one day a week and save say 2500 calories you don’t gobble up next day then in a month you’ve saved 10,000 calories or around 3 pounds average adult human
So have at it
They say God works in mysterious ways. The longer I live, the more I see proof of that. My life isn’t the best, but I’m sure seeing some interesting things, ai have to say.
There are definitely “plateaus” where weight loss seems to stall. What happens, if you lose 20 pounds, you don’t need as many calories! Lose another 20, and caloric needs decrease a little more. It is true that metabolic needs change, the body does try to hang on.
But the excuse makers have twisted this into a pretzel, and say “if you eat restrict calories, your body will go into starvation mode, and you won’t lose any weight!” This is pure rubbish. Bullzhit on steroids. What anyone will discover if they start counting calories, we humans don’t need very much food to maintain a given weight. 1500 to 1700 calories a day might even be too much, if sedentary and/or older. Nobody wants to admit that, because that is basically only a single meal. That’s one reason I like one meal a day - I can eat a huge satisfying meal, feel full for several hours, and not get fat, eat whatever I want. I can’t eat 3 tiny meals, or a bunch of veggie crap, without going off the wagon.
My life weight at six five at aged 18 in 1975
1975: 170-185
1985: 190-205
1997: 205-235
2010: 217-245
Since 2010 I’ve ranged 220-272 (my peak and short lived)
I’ve ranged 30 to 40 pounds twice from aged 40 and I’m 67 now
Running 227 buck naked this morning after 8 days in Vandy with FluA and staph possibly could have been contamination of samples but nonetheless almost killed me
It’s always about eating more or less and discipline
It’s just that simple
I can lose weight eating nothing but McDonald’s double cheeseburgers on sale dollar menu twice a day
Thanks for sharing your strategies!
Although they are not mutually exclusive - if you are fasting for spiritual reasons you can also reap the benefits of fasting for physical results. But not the other way around.
After a 24 hour fast, most people stay at a healthy glucose level for 72 hours.
After a 36 hour fast, most people stay at a healthy glucose level for 7 days.
On the other hand, bouncing back and forth from healthy to unhealthy glucose levels is probably quite stressful on your body.
Lots in this Biden economy are struggling.
Now they tell everyone, “It’s good for you to not eat everyday.”
It’s no longer “going hungry”.
Now it’s trendy “intermittent fasting.”
