Staggering Number Of Potentially Unsafe Elderly Drivers Still Behind Wheel, Study Warns
Daily Voice ^ | 01/08/2025 | Joe Lombardi

A new study reveals a staggering number of elderly Americans experiencing cognitive decline continue to drive, raising concerns about road safety nationwide.

There are approximately 48 million licensed drivers aged 65 and older in the United States, with around 17 percent of seniors suffering from mild cognitive impairment, according to a StudyFinds.org.

This situation presents a considerable challenge in ensuring road safety while also preserving the independence of older adults.

According to an analysis conducted by researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, the healthcare system must improve its monitoring and evaluation of older adults who are still licensed to drive.

The statistics are alarming: Motor vehicle crashes involving drivers over 65 resulted in 7,480 fatalities and nearly 150,000 non-fatal injuries in 2020.

Family physicians often find themselves in a difficult position when asked to evaluate an older patient’s driving ability. Current cognitive screening tests are inadequate, and specialists also struggle with these assessments.

Ahh so you lived in a city and your house burned down? So you moved back to the boonies.
Maybe THAT is what you should have said.

Best of luck to you

This “study” is a good example of how to lie with statistics. They claim that 48 million drivers 65 or older and that 17% of seniors suffer mild cognitive impairment.

This does not necessarily mean that 17% of older licensed drivers are impaired. It is very plausible that a larger percentage of the impaired are not licensed drivers.

They also present no evidence that those with a supposed “mild cognitive impairment” are not able to drive safely.

You are a Jack ass. Go away. Get a life.

Learn to read. I don’t need your condescending bs. I was burned out in the city. I have no choice where to live! There is no housing. WTH is wrong with you?

Go away

Another attack on freedom of the (mostly) conservative generation. There are definitely some much older folks who shouldn’t be driving, but for the vast majority we are fine.

Don’t encourage more government overreach.

a staggering number of elderly Americans...continue to drive

Well, if they're staggering, they can't very well walk where they're going. At least they can drive sitting down.

48 million licensed drivers aged 65 and older
7,480 fatalities and nearly 150,000 non-fatal injuries in 2020.

1. I'd be curious to know how those stats compare to other age groups.

2. Using 2020 driving stats isn't a great idea. Pick any other year.

Giving stats in a vacuum ,means nothing. How does that compare to other age groups?

New drivers should have the same. Dui? Revoked license for 10 years first time.
Reckless driving, revoked for 10 years. Sideshows? Revoked permanently and keep them in jail for min 10 years.

Remove all the modern babysitting features from all cars. The quality of Motorists is degrading the more of this crap they add.

Idiots in 1.5ton vehicles are more dangerous then someone with a firearm.

I can testify to that. I got run over in a crosswalk by a granny driving a golf cart. I bought a motorcycle with the insurance settlement.

Senior citizens 65-74 are the safest group of drivers, involved in less accidents than other age groups, and far less than those under 45.

Our government is retarded.

Yup. And the point is to create a moral panic to achieve ever more picayune control, more bureaucracy and edicts with the promise of eternal life if we obey.

An inquiry to ChatGPT

At what age should people stop driving.

Answer: 75.

Why is that the number?

Answer: Unlike some opinions, there are studies that indicate an elderly driver above age 75 is less likely to have a wreck than drivers under 25. Driving skills do erode with age, but at age 75 that erosion has not reduced their ability below the sub 25 group.

The reason for the number 75 is the loss of ability to recover from a wreck as age increases.
. . . . . .

So 75 is recommended for the driver’s ability to recover. Not because they are unsafe to others.

None of us are getting any younger.

And with old age comes some impairment of sorts. So it does happen.

But I can’t help but think that articles like this have a different, more sinister goal. When you retire, you’re no longer contributing to the labor force. And thus, to a democrat, you are no longer useful and should be “encouraged” to leave the human race as soon as possible. They want to make peoples’ lives miserable.

I was actually trying to read and understand your post. You mentioned you moved to Almeda but gave no state. Was it California? I did not know it burned.
Even you actually think about it you can see it was was confusing.

Again I wish you the best.

Elderly drivers going far below the speed limit pose exponential risks on the roads, especially freeways. That said I find that most drivers are unsafe today. Driving through the Atlanta area its crazy seeing what people do on the roads.

I am waiting for self-driving vehicles.

They are definitely “buggy” but as I age I will get “buggy” as well.

Lol.
