Winter Storm Blair: What to know about ‘dangerous’ weather making way across US
The Hill ^ | 01/05/2025 | LAUREN IRWIN

Winter Storm Blair is headed to impact much of the central and eastern United States late Sunday.

Blizzard conditions are likely for some areas and ice storms and heavy snow are expected in others, The Weather Channel predicts.

Winter storm warnings have been issued for Washington, D.C., Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia.

Travel conditions are expected to be dangerous and some icing could be heavy enough that it could knock out power for some.

Freezing rain is falling in parts of Kansas and Missouri, where icing is already an issue on some roads.

“”The last really bad winter we had was 2013 (if I remember correctly).””

WHO among us is able to do that?

It’s been a recent thing brought on by the weather channel people in the last couple of seasons. I’m wondering how this will affect insurance since, as a “named storm” (Hurricanes), with us that means higher deductibles.

LOL! It might take 2 weeks to slow the spread (or shovel the snow).

The fact that DC is forecast to be nailed with almost a foot of freezing precip, they should take note.

Over here in southern Ohio we will be getting up to 10 inches of snow.
Just south of here they may get a half inch of ice (and less snow)

The power could be going out and the snow will stick around for days. Schools are already closed for tomorrow.

I am thankful for great grandkids at a time like this. They are thankful I live on top a hill and have several old style roll-up plastic sleds.

We lived in Wyoming for six years.

There are two seasons there: winter and the Fourth of July.

Thirty years ago or so, this wouldn’t even be a blip on anyone’s radar.

If you see the weather maps compared to the exact date 30-40 yrs ago, winter weather and summer heat were just ordinary days and not something to tell children they are going to die in ten years over.

We have relatives about an hour south of you.

They are in their mid sixties and not in great health—and everyone in the family tries to persuade them they need to cut down on the number of animals they need to care for on their farm since their kids are grown and moved far away so they are on their own....

This ice storm may deliver the message in a way they can understand.

Do you have a rope tow installed?

How do they get to the top of the hill?

🙄

We have a gentle slope in our backyard, that we call Old Fogey Hill when conditions are right for sledding. We can’t use it every year because the accumulation isn’t always right, but last year, it was perfect a couple of times. Our neighbors thought we had kids over with the shouts of glee. Nope, just the two of us! (We wish the grands were closer, so we sent video of how much fun we had, to hopefully entice them to move closer.)

I’m ready to test out the new sleds we got at Christmas. Our old ones finally cracked last year after several years of use. Fingers crossed…

Watching the aerial view of the drivers skidding on the ice in kansas city was interesting. We’re all gonna crash..in about 30 seconds.

Right in time for Carter’s funeral events.

><

I looked and it’s supposed to be ~28 degrees and sunny on the 9th in DC.

It’s going to be interesting to watch the former and future presidents’ interaction. Joe will be his usual zombie self.

I hope Trump ignores the bastards.

Haha… good one.

Bad thing about “Kentuckiana” is we are miserable most of the year. Our winters are damp, gray, chilly/cold and our summers are generally muggy and very warm/hot. Molds and pollens flourish here from spring to fall. Weather channel did a survey years ago and we came up close to the top of the list for worst climate to exist in.

We live basically for a nice month in fall and one in Spring (6 weeks each side if you are lucky) .
