The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.
I know, you’re just funnin’! (And I can still remember piles of old lumber and a rusting Cub Cadet out in back of the the Utility Barn if I want to!)
Our snow garden is doing great, got agout an 1/8th acre of it and it’s growing like gangbusters lol
Starting Pansies From Seed: A Late-Winter Project for Gardeners
Before you buy transplants from a nursery, see how easy this winter gardening activity can be. Starting pansies from seed is the way to go.

We are still a barren Moonscape in SW ‘Sconny. Supposedly a whole INCH of the White Stuff is heading our way. Whoop-Dee-Doo!
(Just jinxed myself, LOL!)
Good Morning.
Veggie seed Starting not far away.
We’ve got about 4-5 inches total and it’s on all the tree branches so it’s a winter wonderland look. Supposed to be near 40 next two days so here comes the mucky mess. Need to go out and brush off the vehicles while it’s still light and fluffy.
We had 9” earlier in the week, and added at least 3” yesterday. Today we will be shoveling the driveway, front walkway, and our deck (again). I’m hoping to see if we can use the sleds at some point today. I might need a bit of liquid courage to get going for that.
I hate shopping on the weekends if I can avoid it, so whatever leftovers we have will be on the menu. I cooked corned beef with cabbage earlier in the week, and it’s nice to use leftovers in soup or with gnocchi. Plus, there’s always something in the freezer to reheat. I expect I can make it without going to the grocery store until Tuesday when I have errands that take me near a nicer grocery than what is nearby.
We’ve been in this house for 11 years now, and I still feel like a newbie. Didn’t know the first thing about Indiana before we moved here with a job change, other than it’s the next door neighbor west of Ohio where we lived for 25 years.
When we moved, we both had preferences. I really wanted to be able to have the feeling of privacy and a bit of room. Hubby grew up in a neighborhood, so he is used to having neighbors. Somehow, God let us stumble upon this house that was up for sale off and on for two plus years before we saw it.
It’s in a neighborhood, but at the very end of the street on a culdesac, and the backyard opens to woods and a creek. No backyard neighbors!! Beautiful view. A small amount of land. I often wish for more, but truthfully, this is about all I can handle taking care of.
The one difference for us is that we aren’t near family. That’s a big ouch, but it’s been that way since we moved to Ohio. No family near there. Now our children (and grandkids) are coast to coast, following in our footsteps. Thank goodness for modern communication technologies. We use everything we can to be in touch, and to talk with and “see” each other. However, nothing is quite as good as a real in person visit.
Enjoy your house warming party tomorrow!
Lol, carefu, don’t wanna throw your back out shoveling lol
We got 6” + overnight. Hubby out plowing the driveway. Lots of deer tracks in the yard between the house and barn.
I just came in around 11 from an hour and a half (maybe 2) clearing all the asphalt driveway & parking areas. We got an inch of snow last night .... we were borderline to get 2 inches, so I was grateful for 1.
The snow was light & powdery early - I broomed the front sidewalk & across the patio in the back to the stepping stones, then swept them to the asphalt. I was able to blow the entire narrow driveway from the road to the curve where it goes behind the house before the snow got too wet to blow. Most of what is behind the house I had to clear by pushing snow like a plow with the snow shovel.
I’ll start working on food after a hot shower & lunch. There are good football games on this afternoon & evening & we have a TV in the kitchen, so that will keep things interesting during food prep.
Mom has done all the cleaning already, including polishing furniture & silver & is telling me she is bored. I think I am going to put her to work picking meat off of the 2 rotisserie chickens we bought (Hot Chicken Salad Sliders!).
I feel like things are ‘under control’ with being ready, now that the snow issue is over & done with. It will still be a busy day :-)

Uh-oh!
I learned as a kid not to mention being bored. I was promptly given a chore. I used that same technique with my own children. Sounds like you’ve got it in a reverse situation where you can put your Mama to work. If she’s like my Mama (or me!) she’ll pick those chickens clean, and you’ll have plenty for the sliders!
Well, I started the onion seeds and the lavender.
The onion seeds are in the sunporch, which is poorly heated, so it will delay their sprouting some and slow their growth. But that is also where we have the grow lights and a fan for once they sprout.
Once the lavender is up, it will join them.
I’m weird, but I get a lot of satisfaction from using up what is on hand. I’d like to get my shopping trips down to 2x a month. With some planning, I could more than likely do it.
BUT, it IS nice to go ‘out among the English’ (4,000 people, LOL!) every week or so. ;)
I was chatting with a lady in the P.O. on Friday. She said, “My weeks are all screwed up with these holidays falling in the middle of the week! What day is it?” LOL!
“Lots of deer tracks in the yard between the house and barn.”
That’s my favorite part about an overnight snowfall - seeing who was walking across the houseyard overnight!
Deer, squirrel, bunnies, raccoon, opossum, mice, turkey, cats and puppies if they’ve escaped the kennel.
Hoping to see Bigfoot one of these days, though you live closer to him. ;)
Same for me. I could go less frequently with better planning, and amazingly, when temps get into the teens and single digits, I do a fine job of utilizing what’s on hand. Frigid temps are a great motivator for me! (The Florida gal in me understands the concept of cold temps in the most real of ways.)
I was confused, like your PO clerk, in part because we “celebrated” Christmas on Sunday, the 22nd. I’m just starting to make sense of it now.
Love the animal tracks in the snow! Last night, we saw a doe come right up within 15 feet of our house, just off the patio. She didn’t hang around long, and then I got distracted. Lost sight of her.
You’ll do great seeding and growing pansies. My mom used to seed about 25,000 every year around this time. I grow 100 or so for myself now, using a Park Seed Biodome in my sunniest room. I will start mine soon, probably Feb. first. Will put in my greenhouse in April when I start to heat it. This year I have seeds for Delta Blotch Mix.
I got my first order of tea from the Republic of Tea website. Now I have decaf Earl Grey and a chamomile tea.
