Christopher Nolan to Adapt Homer’s Odyssey in Next Film
Greek Reporter ^ | December 24, 2024 | Luis Mendoza

Universal Pictures has announced on X that acclaimed director Christopher Nolan’s next film will be an adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey. The British director’s next project is tipped to be a “mythic action epic” and will be shot with cutting-edge IMAX films. It will be released in theaters worldwide on July 17, 2026.

The film’s cast is star-studded, as Nolan has assembled an all-star roster to do justice to one of the most influential writings in human history. Cast members for this project include Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron.

This will be Nolan’s and Universal’s follow-up for the award-winning Oppenheimer. Production on the movie is set to begin in the first half of 2025. The director is also set to write and produce with Emma Thomas.

Homer, an ancient Greek poet, wrote the Odyssey, one of the most renowned epic poems still read and studied by audiences to this day. He is also credited with writing The Iliad, another of his works that is foundational to Western literature.

Remarkably, not much is known about Homer’s life. In fact, some have even disputed his very existence, believing instead that Homer is more of a symbol for an entire ancient group of oral poets.

Grecian Delight supports Greece

The Odyssey recounts the ten-year journey back home of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, at the conclusion of the Trojan War. On his journey home to his wife Penelope, he faces numerous obstacles and challenges. The Odyssey is characterized by the exploration of themes such as heroism, loyalty, and the struggle against adversity. To say that Odysseus was unlucky during his journey would be an understatement.

This epic poem also features some of the greatest characters of Greek mythology, including gods and monsters such as Poseidon, Athena, the Cyclops, Sirens, and Scylla, a six-headed monster.

Tom Holland signed on to work with Christopher Nolan without knowing they were adapting the Odyssey Following his appearances as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Holland has become one of Hollywood’s main A-listers and a name that studios would break the bank to have on their projects.

Last week, however, Holland admitted that he signed on to the project without a clear idea as to what Christopher Nolan’s production would entail. “To be perfectly honest, I don’t really know what it’s about,” admitted Holland in an interview with The Dish podcast. He also revealed that he had met with Nolan and described his pitch for the film as “awesome.”

Now, both Christopher Nolan and Tom Holland will gear up to produce what could be a once-in-a-lifetime movie, as they aim to do justice to one of the single most noteworthy works of literature ever written.

And Theron as the femme fatale. I could see it.

To bad Ray Harryhauser isn’t still alive. The cyclops scene would be amazing.

Well ... Odysseus ain’t a spring chicken by the time he gets home. Neither is Penelope.

At least Nolan won’t cast Timothee Chalamet as Odysseus, Agamemnon, or Menelaus.

Unless the studio, Saudi billionnaire or money laundering Russian oligarch who finances the film insists, I suppose.

Now if the guy was doing the film of “The Odyssey: A Modern Sequel” by Nikos Kazantzakis, it would be worth watching, but like other great works of modern literature its beyond their talent (sic).

Z is at least 20 years too young for Penelope. That doesn’t mean they won’t do it, but it would be a mistake.

I don’t think I could sit through the “Argus the Dog” scene without bursting into tears.

Anything like the movie “Ulysses” with Kirk Douglas, or the made-for-TV mini-series version with lots of actors from the 1980s?
I hope they do justice to some of the greatest literature ever put down on paper. I have read them. Great Books! Kept me sane in my troubled teen years. Gave me a love of great Literature whereas those dull required English novels almost gave me a dislike of literature. Then the class read The Odyssey and my life changed. At the age of 14 I managed to get an adult library card at the Carlsbad NM library and my outlook on life changed for the better!

Good chance he has to be a girlboss of some sort "for today's audience." Maybe get Rachel Zegler to play him/her. "This movie isn't about the patriarchy anymore!"
