Thanks to The United States’ combination of lackluster train infrastructure and miserable flying experience, there often simply aren’t great choices to get places.

Is the Greyhound bus our savior? No, absolutely not. Yet, despite the Greyhound’s reputation as as a last resort option, I’ve taken it several times (not as a last resort!) over the last few years.

“On long Greyhound bus trips, the bus will usually stop at a gas station. But it’s still a good idea to bring some healthy snacks because middle-America gas stations range aren’t known for their wide variety of healthy meals.”

What, sushi isn’t a healthy meal?

A TX attorney I’m acquainted with has used a high end bus line to go from Austin to Dallas IIRC. Might have been these guys:

The last time I took Greyhound was on an DC<->NY round trip.

The bus left DC on time about 1am. It barely made it to Baltimore. It finally refused to go further on the NJ Turnpike. A Greyhound commuter bus picked us up and got us to the Port Authority about three hours late. The ride back to DC was fine.

I usually travel by plane now with Allegient or Avelo. The price and travel time are both less.

I rode ALSA in Spain. The buses were clean and ran on time. The fares were reasonable.

Bus fares in the USA have become quite expensive.

Going from Boston to Hartford on Peter Pan cost $28 as I recollect.

The Megabus from Philly to Boston was a more reasonable $52.

I spent an afternoon in New Castle, Delaware, which is a very pleasant colonial town.

I took them a lot when I was a kid to visit friends and family. Most of the time it was just fine. Now... I’ll drive.

Busses are great down in South America and Mexico. I don’t know why we don’t get busses like that. “Full Cama” reclining seats that can be made in to a bed, food, and an attendant. Take the bus at night and wake up in the new city. Save the cost of a hotel and gets you there in comfort without the hassle of airports.

Why does a train or bus cost more than a ride to Seatac and flight to Portland. I used to work in Portland area, my family was in Bremerton, I would ride the train there on weekends, and back on the late run on Sunday. It was about 50bucks round trip. Greyhound was cheaper. Now a flight is cheaper, is that because airlines are heavily subsidized?

My grandsons were impressed at a picnic lunch we had once when they were about 9 or 10. One wanted to know where I got the chicken. I said the gas station. “GramE, you get gas at a gas station. I never heard of gas station fried chicken!”

Greyhound was purchased by Flix Bus a few years back. We took Flix Bus Budapest to Krakow and wondered at the time why US searches would show Greyhound.

Long distance bus rides can cost more than flying.

You can find bus routes on Google Maps by entering your destination city and selecting transit. This worked well in Europe where we took trains Istanbul to Bucharest and then on to Budapest. It also worked GREAT for public transportation within a city.

If you want high end, no TSA it private security, with valet or door to door black car service from Austin to Dallas JSX is the way. They pick you up at home in a black Yukon drop you at the FBO and you walk with your luggage to the lounge have a complementary single malt and they come there for your luggage when it’s time to board you walk to the jet get on and then fly direct to another private FBO they bring you your luggage and the black Yukon takes you to your hotel. Only about twice as expansive as business class on commercial cattle car and OOO so worth it.

The bus station where I grew up was widely known for being a perv hangout. I was walking by one day and a man came out and asked me where he could get a woman. Like a 13 year old boy with a sack of library books knows where to get a woman.

I haven’t taken a bus since the Vietnam era. If it wasn’t for the criminal element I suppose I wouldn’t mind it at all.
