The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Been going down a rabbit hole of the perennial/native nuts and berries but maybe with slightly improved cultivars. Elderberry sales in the US is on the rise due to Big Pharma taking a major hit with the COVID virus and jab plus MAHA.
Found that U of Missouri is the head of a new project — https://elderberry.missouri.edu/
Annuals are great to eat but a lot of work to grow for selling when you’re are little. Long lived perennials seem like a good retirement income.
Bunch of other fruits and nuts that grow here natively but tend to not be grocery store available are gaining popularity as well.
A little 401k money came in which is good because my 301fu money was running out so it’s almost job hunting time again, mid December, again.
Elderberry...Well, you probably need some more sunlight, which means you might have to sell some existing timber to make open sunny space!
Other possibilities for any open space. Northern Pecans might be something to look at planted along the north end of your property, or black walnuts. (Also a good timber crop!)
Hazel nuts: Hazel nuts can be grown under Walnuts. https://chriscondello.wordpress.com/2013/04/03/practical-permaculture-nuts-about-hazelnuts/
"Hazels prefer full sunlight but will tolerate deep shade, nut production will be reduced proportionately to light reduction. Most species prefer a medium soil moisture, and a neutral soil. Hazel trees are one of the few trees that can tolerate juglone, which is a natural herbicide produced by black walnuts…"

"Unlike some other nuts we could mention, growing hazelnuts is a cinch. On top of that, they produce quickly, so you don’t have to wait a decade for your first harvest. So if you’ve been looking for a good source of healthy food to grow in your garden that won’t take up a ton of room and that you can start enjoying in just a few years, the hazelnut is the perfect option."
They list some varieties. Something to consider. (They do say that hazel nut bushes can also be browse for your animals.) Good luck!
You have a lot of Red colored flowers! Very nice! (You have hibiscus for tea!)
I would share pictures of my Pansies and Viola, but it snowed last night and they are all under several inches of snow!
(If you bought any seeds online you should be on several mailing lists and receiving a combined 6" - 7" of seed catalogues right about now!)
Liz; Yum!
“Omit alcohol, if you prefer.” Thank you, however, I prefer Grand Marnier and grated orange peel to finish!
This was not my year for gardening. But it was my year for planting seeds about Jesus in various locations, and planting many memes in support of Donald J. Trump on social media. The following image satisfies your two criteria in one meme—it was planted to campaign for Trump, and it would make a great holiday salad to delight the conservative relatives and fly right over the heads of the liberal ones: Pepe salad
My veggies are done for the year, so I cleaned out their beds of dead stems. The perennials are a mixed lot, with half of them dormant and the other half still blooming, like gaillardia and some portulaca and yes, a few roses. But tonight’s temps are in the twenties for the first time, so I expect even the late holdouts will be gone tomorrow morning. I have my numerous houseplants to tide me over for the winter, but can’t wait to start up the garden again.
Can squirrels carry off plastic mouse snap traps? Those plastic traps keep disappearing entirely, bait and all. I don’t want mice to enter my house, so I’m trying to eliminate them from my outdoors yards.
Yeah....I’d prefer your version, too.
Anything ‘Ree’ is good with me! :)
When I lived in Watertown, WI I had a renter-turned-friend who lived in the top floor of my converted ‘Victorian Beauty.’ (It was already ‘chopped up’ when we bought it; I made the best of it.)
Her Mom made the BEST Eggnog with ‘Harvey’s Bristol Cream Sherry’ as an ingredient.
I was always glad at Christmastime that I only lived ‘downstairs’ from the festivities, LOL!
That V-8 will keep you healthy through the coldest Winter all the way until Spring.
Since I made the first batch of it in 2017, I can’t live without the stuff. :)
“Came out delicious and it was my 1st time cooking one.”
Prime Rib can be daunting the first time out. For starters it’s an EXPENSIVE cut of meat, so you do NOT want to screw it up!
When I first made it for a family Thanksgiving a number of years ago, I did a ‘test run’ for Beau ahead of time. He said, ‘Oh, Darn!’ LOL!
My first choice was a Crown Roast of Pork - but that was more expensive than the Prime Rib! I mean, it’s JUST fancy PORK CHOPS fer Pete’s Sake!
Did she ever part w/ the recipe?
My sister, nephew, and some brother inlaw are visiting.
He hate turkey so I made this also.
He had been such an asshole since he had been here I had to leave the house for several hours on Friday to avoid punching his lights or and/or ruining my relationship with my good sister.
He has so many h bad traits that I overlooked for years but this trip has broken my ability to make excuses for him.
At his core he is a selfish child who must get his way. He will try to manipulate people by controlling their emotions with his behavior much like a woman who might be on a reality TV show.
When we are at his house (massive technology driven home with 120+inch TV and sound system in his entertainment room and each common room having 2-5 tvs on the wall including the kitchen) he pretends to be gracious by asking “what do you want to watch” as he goes thru all the movie options.
No matter how many times you say “that looks good” he keeps going until he finds what he wants to watch and all the while he keeps saying “just say when see something you like.”
It got to the point where I just answer that question with “whatever you want to watch Frankie” everytime.
He cannot be without control of the TV and went behind my back to ask my adult son if it was OK to bring his “apple TV box”
I found out and told Frankie “of course you can bring it.”
Well he shows up plugs it in to the TV and watches some stuff but he had to wait for the football games to be over on Thanksgiving.
The next morning he went to town for a while (we are out in the county) and I tried to get on my YouTube TV account and Netflix but the only things that were available on the TV were stuff from his apple TV control box.
I couldn’t figure out what was going on and after a phone call to him where he gave me suggestions to fix the problem which were not going to fix the problem....I had to unplug his apple TV control box.
Voila! Instant fix.
So I watched some stuff and the next day...same problem.
I had to unplug it again and he layer gave me a dirty look when he found out.
I heard my sister whisper to him “just ask him for the wifi password”
It was at that moment I realized why we kept getting stuck on his apple TV account.....he brought his ATT wifi router (the exact same model I have that runs on cell tower connections and which we had spoken about when I got it, even sending him a photo of it and he remarked that it was the same as his) and he was using his router to talk to his apple TV controller attached physically to my TV.
So that was why I could never get ony tv with my accounts....he had taken over my TV with his router system and it was all because he had either refused to ask me for the wifi password (would have gladly gave it to him) or he wanted to be in total control.....most likely both.
His response to that was when I made a glass baking dish of scrambled eggs in the oven, and fresh bacon, for breakfast the next morning was to ignore what I made, not serve any of the eggs and bacon to his 3 y.o. son but offer him rice from the rice cooker, and then refuse to eat the scrambled eggs (which I made specifically because that was what he requested) and say “I want sunny side up eggs.”
I ended up refusing and my sister cooked him sunny side up eggs.
You may be thinking “Ernie, nobody likes their brother inlaw, you are probably blowing this out of proportion. You may even be causing this by being a jerk yourself.”
My wife who has prayed for Frankie to change and “gave it up to God” recently to give her patience in dealing with him, and loves to “put me in check” is in total agreement with me.
Just so you know I’m not crazy....He REARRANGED THE SILVERWARE IN OUR DRAWER AND MOVED ALL OF IT INTO DIFFERENT LOCATIONS.
This is when I had to leave the house for a few hours.
And if you still think it may he me.....
He doesn’t like dogs (even though he owned one before) and he yells at my old dog and puppy when they come over to sniff him.
At midnight on Thanksgiving/black Friday I was asleep and I heard the old dog (Bear) bark to go out and pee.
I was pulling on pajama pants and thr dog barked a 2nd time.
I went to the living room and the dog was standing next to the door and couch waiting.
Frankie was sitting right next to the door on the couch, 1 foot away from the dog, legs up on the extended couch, ignoring the dog while everyone was asleep, watching his apple TV on my TV.
He would have let that dog shit on the floor.
Thanks for letting me vent.
I’m going to try that eggnog recipe!
Great....I know you’ll love it.
My family in upstate Pennsylvania sent photos of a recent snowstorm, also my sister in Colorado. Looked beautiful!
I cannot grow a number of things that need a deep freeze like tulips, hyacinth, crocuses and lilacs - I’ve seen snowy places in the spring and they are beautiful! Wish I could have them here but the don’t like my climate.
Another spring will be here before you know it and everything will be flowering and blooming again for those of you in snow country.
And, it won’t be your last time cooking a prime rib! I’m sure everyone loved it. My brother roasts his in the oven on a bed of salt, not sure of the details but it always turns out delicious - parts of it are more done than other for those that like their meat well done, other parts rare or medium rare.
I’m hoping we have one for Christmas too!
