Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

I nearly didn’t get around to it, and then I REALLY didn’t get around to it. OY...!

This 417 yard is less a “dog leg” and more of an “ox bow.” If you drive straight away and DEEP to the far side of the fairway at the bend, only then do you see all the way around the corner to the pin.

Off the tee I risked a tree strike with that intrusive palm to the near left in a try for green grass beyond that mammoth mass of Mojave consuming the inner sweep of the bend. I cleared the largest intrusion of sand to a lie just past a trio of palms where the bunker makes a pointy excursion into the fairway. Though safely in the fairway, much to my chagrin this vantage point offered no visibility to he green, which lay yet farther around the band to my left.

I pulled a 2-iron and closed the face in a smidge, hoping to shoot low and away from crowding tree branches on the left but draw the ball back in to the left and so end up with a lie on the farther right side of the fairway, short of the bunker guarding the green on that flank, but with a clear shot at the cup. Well, I got the distance I was after, but closed the face in too much, and that hoped-for draw morphed into a hook that put me into the sand. Barely. On the FAR side AWAY from the green.

Pitching out, I made the green, but with more length than loft came to rest beyond the flag setting up a putt of nearly 20 feet to make par.

Here, again, my inconsistent short game left me in the lurch as my stroke had the strength but not quite the accuracy: the ball slipped by a scant six inches to the right, pulling up 2 feet past the cup.

A tap-in Bogey, here on a frustrating 15th, drops me back to just 1 under par with 59 strokes on the round; three strokes off the pace set by ArGee, who holds a commanding 4-under par lead, with just three holes left to play.

Good morning. Happy Humph Day!

Driving home from the airport last night at around midnight we were met with snow. And not just the “non-stick” flurries we that were foreguessed. There was actual white stuff on the ground at the apartment complex. Really???!!! It was 25 fs walking The Princess this morning. I want my spring back!

As if the snow weren’t enough, we pulled into the parking lot to see 2 sheriffs with dogs walking between our building and the stand of trees that separates the complex from the neighborhood behind it. The walked right past our front door. What???!!! This is supposed to be a safe neighborhood. Well, whatever they were trying to find didn’t come near our apartment, but it was still unsettling.

So B-I-L is ensconsed in his late mother’s home and he and Mrs. ArGee will do serious funeral planning today. One sister wants to either have the funeral on Friday or after Holy Week since her daughter is doing bridal stuff on the weekend. Friday seems rushed now but the Church could accommodate it. If we wait until after Holy Week B-I-L will have to go home and come back.

As our dear ‘Face used to say, if it ain’t one thing, it’s two things.

All I could think of during Wordolf today was “Water, water everywhere and the clubhouse nearby for a drink.” I managed to loft the ball over the water but got a little too much height so it hit just short of the green and started to roll downhill. I held my breath as it stopped just shy of rolling into the channel. It was a little difficult getting my stance to hit the ball onto the green for a straightforward putt for par.

Good Midweek Morning!

We are in the midst of one of those rare (for here) nice weeks of weather... trying to enjoy it fully!

Just get it over the water and avoid the sand... the key to the 16th hole... Well a nice 5 wood off the tee did just that for me... from the fringes of the rough to the far right of the hole, I chipped up a bit to the high side of the cup leaving me a fairly short and direct tap in for Par...

Cold drizzle this AM... PArtly Sunny and 51 now... I hate MN... Ruined what could have been a perfectly good commute on the bike by making me use the truck...

*sigh*

Yet another “middle of the road” performance on this hole. Not as much of a hook on the initial drive, but not great distance either. Sliced it on the next shot from the fairway, but set up for a chip to the green and a finishing putt.

Hmmm. Well, it definitely, uhhh... ‘sharpens’ the emotions. I was just prickly as a porcupine.

Staying dry was foremost in my mind off the tee, here, on the 16th. I put the shot well over the briny blue averting any watery woe, but came to lie in that weird cup at the fore of the green. An odd sort of bowl to chip out of, I was distant enough from the cup to fall short by a groan, and humbled enough to accept a tap-in for par.

Thus, it has been truly said:

"To find a man's true character, play golf with him."
-- P. G. Wodehouse

I hold onto my spot at 1 under par as we move to the penultimate 17th.

I write to satisfy.

It came to my mind some time ago, that a great deal of my inward thinking has been shared on this site, on a great diversity of subjects. So I began to download my Comments as the initial phase of a project aimed at coalescing them into a more intelligible slate of topical commentaries. Over 15,500 replies, some of them modest editorials in themselves, is producing quite a bit of material.

I hope to aggregate and edit all of it down to something I can give to my kids. I hear so often how people through much of their lives never knowing what their folks were thinking; never knowing their musical tastes, sports they played in school, hobbies they set aside for children and careers, why they didn’t think Nixon was a crook, why they thought Reagan was one... For all the conversation there’s not time or opportunity to have, I feel it’s something I can do to give them a more expansive grasp of my thinking.

I don’t yet know how it’s all going to turn out, but perhaps if I am diligent they may be impressed enough to actually read it.

Interesting thoughts. I have many years of journals stashed in boxes in my closet. Anyone who wants to know what I thought can just pick one up. They’ll also see shopping lists, notes from church committee meetings, and stuff like that.

I’m sure my kids think they know what I’m thinking. My son attempted some blogging at one point and his allusions as to what was going on in the minds of Mrs. ArGee and me suggest he was very, truly, surely wrong.

Whether he’d read such a thing as you’re working on and, thus, discover it is questionable at best.
