Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

He will if he quits trying to control his entire environment! The doctors told FD that Rob’t was in full control of how well he recovered and reorganized his life so he isn’t such a mad man.

The medical technology is such today that they are doing things with better results than they did even five years ago.

And I’m glad because I have at least two surgeries ahead of me. More on that, later!

Chip came out to eat!! That was at least five minutes ago and he is still there at his bowls. I don’t dare move!

Indeed!! All the moreso because I now have a walker until I’m back up to “normal” strength and stamina. And it’s right behind me, so he had to pass it one way or another to get to his bowls.

He’s such a sweet little guy. I think he’s even feeling better.

He has appointed himself as guardian, and now sleeps on the sofa. He doesn’t get down until the wheels of the walker are on the rug. As soon as I leave the room, he’s back up there, making sure it’s me, and that I’m OK. Linda said he was posted there the entire time I was gone.

Good Morning!

It sounds like it all came on so gradually that it was hard to tell what was going on…

Very fortunate that help arrived when it did!

Oh, that’s sweet. It shows that you’re really important to him, even if he can’t bring himself to sit on your lap.

Thank you. Sally and I are excellent drivers, and there’s a break from the winter storms, so it’s all good.

Good morning!

I wasn’t even thinking well enough to make the decision during the night to go to the hospital. This thing took six months to finally explode into a crisis, so no, I couldn’t tell what was going on.

It took three people to finally convince me that it was past time to get help. And two of those people drove me to ER.

The rest is history, and although I’ve left out a lot of the details, I was very well cared for. But hospitals stress me out, so the last two days, all I could think about was going home to finish recovery.

😉

We’re really getting bumped around by high winds, lost power at 2 am, reported as NVE equipment damage, restored by 3 am.

Still very windy.

Sorry to hear that, but ready to go is ready to go. She’s at peace, and I hope you are/will be soon with her passing.

The gradual decline made it difficult to get a handle on what was going on…

It was great that those three folks were able to convince you!

Getting out of the hospital as soon as possible is always a great idea!

Glad that Chip seems to be getting more comfortable and part of the family!

The Irishman on the back deck took a beating over the wind. Paddy O’Furniture is knocked about...

We had those in Vegas, but they lasted for days. The wind would get trapped in the valley (shaped like a bowl) and just swirl for days, and the static electricity would affect everything you touched. People just pulled down a sleeve or used a covered elbow to open doors.

And of course, we get it here, hence the name! The wind comes boiling out of Zion Canyon and right through town. Sorry about your Irish hangers-on. I hope nothing gets destroyed and that your trash cans have stayed home.

No idea about the trash cans. Although there’s enough light to see I ain’t going out there.

Maybe I’ll send my son...

Thanks, nully. Sad, and not sure what all needs to be done until I get to Florida tomorrow evening and meet up with my brother, but resigned.
