What trump did was actually learn to make fries, then he made fries, served them on an actual order and served other orders.
Not staged, arranged, of course, security required that but he did the work, talked to workers and performed part of the job, he did not stage a photo op.

Of the subtle messages in doing this event, one that took a while for me to remember was that (I think) blacks have a large connection with McDonalds, they seem to be a large part of the customer base and so a McDonalds story will reach a lot of them and get mentioned.
