Opposites attract - including when it comes to food and drink. If you've ever enjoyed a bar of sea-salted chocolate, you'll know just how weirdly well sweet and savoury can sometimes go together.

But there's another unfamiliar combination that's been appearing in more and more recipes: sweet and spicy, often known as "swicy". Social media is filled with the likes of swicy Korean chicken, swicy salsas and even swicy brownies.

While it's been a foodie "trend" for the past few years, this combination is anything but new to many Asian cuisines.

In Korea, for example, the popular red chili paste called gochujang adds a slight sweetness to stews and other dishes. There is also five-spice powder, which is a staple in Chinese cuisine. The spice mixture consists of spicy Sichuan pepper and the sweet notes of cloves, cinnamon, star anise and fennel seeds.

I feel like someone just invented a new word that they thought was cute. So they decided to write an article about it. But they felt foolish saying that they just invented a new word. So they tell us that there is a situation which is often known as "swicy"

Hey, I used it for the FIRST TIME today to marinate pork ribs I will be air frying tomorrow to make Char Siu ribs. I took a little taste of the five spice powder and it has a complex taste of many different flavors. Tomorrow I will see how it works out with the ribs.

You are right.

Except it isn't cute.

Sweet and spicy is a very old combination of flavors and has been around in the US for quite a while.
