Not sure. You might ask Alex Karras or Paul Hornung. I doubt Art Schlichter would know.

As do I. He was betting on HIS OWN TEAM, for heaven’s sake. The HoF also waited until Ron Santo died before they put him in. Jagoffs!

“NO NO NO to Pete Rose in the HOF”

I’ve always felt the Baseball HOF should have an annex (maybe call it “The Out House”) for unquestionably exceptional players whose careers were tainted by significant indiscretions. Besides Rose, players like Joe Jackson, Buck Weaver, Sammy Sosa and a number of the other ‘performance-enhanced’ ball players could be included there.

Heh, I emulated his headfirst slide when I was into baseball. Crazy stupid, because I didn’t have talent, just desire. Did it once when I was in my mid twenties playing softball and wracked up my clavicle and shoulder when the guy at the base planted his leg solidly. Well. He sure had talent.

RIP Charlie Hustle...you gave us memories and entertainment to last a lifetime. You should be in the HOF with Nolan!

Yes, baseball fans are a unique breed. As a kid I watched the movie Damn Yankees, which proves your point. Thanks for sharing.

Should have been induced into HOF years ago. MLB allowed the cheating Astros to retain the WS trophy or 3 steroid HR cheaters to continue playing w minimal repercussions, then Pete Rose should have been inducted.
For full disclosure - I’m a Dodger fan living 20 minutes from Cincinnati.

I had a picture of him for years. He wanted to hurry after ballgames and didn’t really want to be delayed by a bunch of kids so he would get in early and sign a bunch of headshots. I got one from him outside Crosley Field (which was a great ballpark.)

I was always a Pete Rose fan. I would love every ballplayer to play the game the way Pete did. Off the field was a different thing. But Pete Rose was an essential part of some of the greatest teams in history. The Big Red Machine (especially the 1976 version) has to rank among the greatest teams of all time.

Should he be in the Hall of Fame? Well, there is the character thing, but a number of less than stellar characters are in teh Hall of Fame.

Dear Commissioner Manfred,

I am no longer hanging around with gamblers.

They let murderers in the hall of Fame but betting on your team is unforgivable. He is in the top nine players of all time. And he would be leadoff hitter.
There is only one unforgivable sin that would keep you out of heaven. Not believing the Jesus is the way, the truth, and life.

For God’s loved the world that whosoever believeth in him shall have eternal life.

All other sins could be forgiven.

Yeah, that’s true.

I’m trying to keep myself involved enough to keep up with the
general concept of what’s going on, but it is rapidly entering
the realm of Draino.

It’s interesting that the majority of the world’s inhabitants
don’t seem to have the slightest clue what we’re being sucked
into either.

In the last year I have addressed something I’ve observed
over the last 18 months or so.

We used to get a really bad looking post (as it relates to
the decline of society) every few days here. Today we get
10-30 per day.

In Revelation it talks about angels holding back the full
effects of evil upon the world, and then them allowing
evil to be released upon the world.

Isn’t it amazing how that very thing seems to be taking
place at this time.

Just wow...

The HOF is actually a separate entity and not affiliated with MLB. Its full title is “National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.” It is a private organization celebrating the greats of baseball. This includes non-MLB players, such as the Negro League inductees and non-players associated with the MLB, such as umpires and announcers. If it was a MLB entity, the Negro League inductees would be problematic.

The Dowd report is very damning. Gambling on one’s own team is a conflict of interest. I am not sure without reading the full report as to whether Rose bet against his team, but I do recall an article or book written years ago that outlined how Rose betting on wins for his team hurt his team. Rose would sacrifice his pitching staff in losses so that he had well-rested good relievers for the games he felt confident about. In other words, he was willing to lose some games to fix others.

Regardless, he signed the dotted line.
