A woman has filed a lawsuit against Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of the popular diabetes drugs marketed under the the brand names Ozempic and Wegovy, claiming that the drug’s labeling doesn’t adequently warn about the potential side effects.
One of those side effects, Juanita Gantt claimed on CBS Mornings, impacted her colon, which she asserts had to be removed as a result of the medication.
Novo Nordisk has responded to the claims, saying the suit is "without merit."
Gantt says she was first prescribed Wegovy, and then Ozempic, because her doctor thought she was at risk of developing diabetes. As she told CBS, the 62-year-old weighed 242 lbs.
At first, she said, "I was feeling fine. I enjoyed the days that I didn't have to worry about my appetite. I didn't have cravings. I just felt like I was doing something positive for myself.”
But in October 2023, Gantt says her husband found her unconscious on the floor.
She told CBS that parts of her large intestine had died and needed to be removed; While recovering from surgery, she went into cardiac arrest.
She now lives with an ileostomy bag. As the Cleveland Clinic explains, it’s the result of a surgery that changes the way your body excretes waste.

Check that 300x7 is 2100 cals which would be a little more than half a pound a week, all else being equal.
Ozempic is approved for use in the EU.
Never take a pill that interferes with your body’s normal function.
I won’t touch weight loss drugs or statins for this reason. Nor will I have weight loss surgery. Everyone I know who has done it regrets it. It either doesn’t work, or works too well and they wind up with nutritional deficiencies.
I took liraglutide off and on for several years. Appetite reduction was immediate, with about an 8-10% body weight reduction. The side effects were intolerable. Even at the initial, lower dosing - debilitating constipation, of the’anatomy altering’ degree. The most dangerous was gastro reflux when lying down. Food just sat in the stomach for hours, and while sleeping would regurgitate and I’d barely wake in time to close my epiglottis and not choke, in fact I did inhale stomach contents a few times (even a ml of stomach acid is dangerous). I vomited after a single ibuprofen hours later...it just sat there being caustic in the stomach. The risk of aspiration wasn’t worth it.
Well, injecting lizard venom peptides can be hazardous.
A friend of mine was diagnosed with gastroparesis back in the late 1990’s. Horrible disease. She had to carry a cup everywhere to vomit up her saliva as it would just sit in her stomach until she would involuntarily heave it up. She ended up getting a feeding tube. Very sad. Very sweet girl.
No carbs? Does not sound to kind to the bowels either.
Because, of course, every single human’s system is exactly like yours, right?
My sister has gastroparesis she has three kids, the youngest being 5 months old..when she is pregnant it was extra difficult for her since the stomach has a harder time working so she would take reglan to make food go down quicker, she took a small amount everyday or whenever needed the doc told her it was safe for the baby she really had no choice..its a horrible horrible disease
I was first diagnosed when I was 27... colonoscopy every 3 years... Still had one rupture and lost a good chunk of my colon...
Permanent diarrhea is not fun...
Sometimes it’s just better to kick back and monitor for awhile.
Or, here’s a novel idea ... how about trying a keto diet, intermittent fasting, exercising, etc??
Hells Bells, she would have been better off just staying overweight. At least she would have still been able to have a proper bowel movement.
Any physician still prescribing this drug deserves to be sued into poverty

Ain’t that the truth!
No, but there are mathematical limits to just about everything.
*too kind
Seems like every new medicine carries more and more and worse and worse side effects.
Why anyone wants to take the stuff is beyond me.
It’s not like big pharma has a great track record on meds these days, or for several years.
RFK Jr has been talking about this; I listened to an in-depth interview with him that included a long discussion about the prescribing of Ozempic. He said terrible things about it all — like the advertising and the incentives for doctors to prescribe it and the potential side-effects.
