Millions of people have long suspected it, but now a leak suggests that out phones really are listening to us.
An apparent pitch deck from one of Facebook's marketing partners appears to detail how the firm eavesdrops on users' conversations to create targeted ads.
In a slideshow, Cox Media Group (CMG) claims that its 'Active-Listening' software uses AI to collect and analyze 'real-time intent data' by listening to what you say through your phone, laptop or home assistant microphone.
'Advertisers can pair this voice-data with behavioral data to target in-market consumers,' the deck states.
The pitch deck goes on to tout Facebook, Google and Amazon as clients of CMG, suggesting they could be using its Active-Listening service to target users.
Since the story broke, Google removed the media group from their 'Partners Program' website.

Amazon responded to 404 Media by stating that its ads arm 'has never worked with CMG on this program and has no plans to do so.'
But the spokesperson added that that if one of its marketing partners violates its rules, the company will take action, leaving the status of Amazon's relationship with CMG somewhat unclear.

Common sense. Many of us believed that the Patriot Act would only be used against Islamic terrorists. But we have learned that it was and is being used against Americans. Likely against law abiding Americans.
The tech is always capable of doing something. If it has a camera and microphone on it then it can be used to watch and listen... if people and entities really want to and are not restrained in any way. And there appear to be no restraints and restrictions.
Just assume that if they are capable then they are watching you and listening to you.
Oh, boy. I’ll have donuts and coffee ready laced with high levels of funny mushroom extract.
Computer spellcheck overreliance............
“Can’t tell you how many times I have had conversation with family members and 20 minutes later something comes up on my internet link regarding what we talked about.”
We really notice that when we talk and/or text/email relatives in the MW, SW and here in California with the die hard Apple users.
During COVID, daughter and I were sitting at a park and talking. She mentioned she needed a new toaster. By the time we got home, we BOTH had ads on Facebook for toasters. Yes, they listen.
Been going on for years. I will be talking on the cell phone and the tv will be on Youtube and as I am looking I soon start seeing suggestions of videos of things being talked about during the call.
I get ads all the time in my web browser of things I looked up at Google or browsing affiliated sites.
This is news?!
Only to those who scoffed at it years ago...............
Happened to us last Monday.
Sis and I had spent the day with our SIL during our brother’s surgery.
On the drive home, Sis said that she had forgotten her water bottle back in the waiting room. We discussed whether or not we should go back. We didn’t.
When she logged in to Amazon on her PC (not cell) the next day, the screen was full of water bottles to buy.
Creepy.....................
Yes.
There is a reason cell phones are not allowed in military secure areas and it isn't because you can call home or take pictures.
If you don't want it known don't say it in the presence of a cell phone. I include smart TV and my computer in that classification.
The problem is not that we are paranoid. The problem is that we are not paranoid enough.
“Many of us believed that the Patriot Act would only be used against Islamic terrorists.”
And many of us were terrified from the very beginning that The Patriot Act was extremely dangerous for American citizens. I know I was.
“we are not paranoid enough.”
Sounds like a perfect tagline.
“Congress has done nothing to avoid this because they like the results.”

And they like the money they get from the social media companies.
Yep. It listens to everything all the time. I will leave my phone in the shop while listening to podcasts or talk radio. On more than one occasion I had “misinformation” messages from google. ‘They say’ you can turn that off but I doubt it does.
I’ve noticed that at times the ads displayed inside my Gmail box echo whatever is being discussed in longer personal emails.
Good for you. Many of us trusted our government back then. And we were fooled.
In the mad rush to protect ourselves from Islamic terrorists after 9/11, we attacked two countries, Afghanistan and Iraq, and wasted American resources and lives and gave our government the ability to direct its resources and new found abilities towards the American people.
In this respect, the terrorists won. They inflicted the biggest injury to America.
Some of us never thought that the powers provided by the Patriot Act would be used against us. We were naive to trust our government.
We were fools.
Many were worried back then that it would morph into something.....
Those “many” were wise.
