Kara Welsh was a national champion and two-time All-American for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnastics team.
Welsh, 21, of Plainfield, Ill., was shot and killed late Friday night inside an apartment on W. Whitewater St. A 23-year-old man was arrested Saturday in connection with the case.
In remembering Welsh Sunday, UW-Whitewater Athletics called her "a true Warhawk."
"To put into words the impact Kara had on the Warhawk community is impossible," said Coach Jen Regan. "A powerful athlete, dedicated teammate, and the light in everyone’s dark days, Kara truly lifted each and every one of us up in her time as a Warhawk gymnast. There are no words to describe the void we all feel in our hearts, but Kara’s legacy will live on through Warhawk gymnastics forever."
According to the school, Welsh holds four of the top eight scores recorded by a Warhawk gymnast in program history on the apparatus.
Welsh earned a second-place finish in the WIAC Championship after tying for second on the vault. In her first National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Championship appearance, Welsh tied for third on the vault to earn All-America honors.
In 2023, Welsh won the vault title at the WIAC Championship meet and qualified for nationals as an individual. She went on to win the national title in the event with a score of 9.825.
In 2024, Welsh battled back from an illness to compete in the WIAC Championship meet – her first competition of the season. She stuck her vault, and tied the program record in the event, 9.875, and claimed the vault title for the second consecutive season. She went on to help the Warhawks to a runner-up finish in the NCGA Championship.
The school announced Sunday that flags on the UW-Whitewater campus will fly at half-staff on Tuesday, September 3 in Welsh’s memory.
A GoFundMe page has been established with contributions supporting the Welsh family.
"Kara was a true Warhawk – an amazing person, student and athlete," said Athletic Director Ryan Callahan. "We are all lucky to have spent time with her over the past three years. She was selfless and made everyone around her better. Our hearts go out to her mom, Nancy, and the rest of her family and friends."
Was she half black? The nose does not look Caucasian.

Whitewater police say a 23-year-old man is in jail after a UW-Whitewater student was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds late Friday night.
Officers responding around 11:55 p.m. to a report of a gunshot wound found Kara Welsh, 21, of Plainfield, Illinois, dead at 147 W. Whitewater St., No. 203, Whitewater Police Chief Dan Meyer reported in a statement.
SNIP...."The 23-year-old man also was in the apartment, Meyer said, and officers determined an altercation between the man and Welsh preceded the shooting.
Meyer said the man is in the Walworth County Jail and that police will forward charges of first-degree intentional homicide, endangering safety by the use of a dangerous weapon, and disorderly conduct while armed to the Walworth County District Attorney’s office."
Sounds like she was telling him to leave or breaking up with him and he shot her. Ex boyfriend from Milwaukee or Madison?
“Am I the only one that lives in a county with a jail roster online?”
The larger county next door has their inmates listed on-line. My county doesn’t because word of mouth is enough to let us know the half a dozen or so who are temporarily residing there.
I just double checked. We’ve got a Winn, Yasmin Satin., but her FB page shows she’s a white girl.
I am sure the suspect is Amish.
Rachel Dolezal please pick up the black courtesy phone.
More info, but not much.
Mentions facility.
BTTT
Another report noted there were multiple gunshot wounds. A crime of passion?!?
No idea. Would that make a difference?
No, of course not. I was just curious.
Sad regardless.
Jim Morrison?
I know Rachel’s parents. Nothing but pure white Christian blood in that family. Rachel just didn’t turn out right as sometimes happens.
It’s the one I looked at earlier....I believe it’s the one.
I don’t think so and what if she was? That has absolutely nothing to do with her being murdered!
They do that at our county jail too.
I check it once in a while, just for laughs.
